Ephemera

Ephemera is defined as pieces of paper, posters, or documents that were not meant for long-term preservation, but the pieces featured here have survived for decades, if not centuries. We have expanded our ephemera collection to include playbills, photographs, letters, and illustrations by famous authors and painters. Many of the items included in this collection are unique and one-of-a-kind. By their nature, ephemera can be very fragile and delicate, and very prone to rips and tears. Many choose to carefully frame or otherwise protect their ephemera to maintain its quality and worth. The inclusion of any of these items of ephemera would add depth and diversity of your personal rare book collection, and should you wish to frame any of the available pieces, you would have a unique piece of art to proudly display.

Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Description:
Charles Landis, Vineland, NJ, 1875; March, 1875 issue of The Vineland Rural newspaper, published by dynamic 19th century visionary Charles K. Landis (1833-1900), founder, designer, developer, and promoter of Vineland, New Jersey. After traveling throughout the United States in search of an ideal location, Landis chose Cumberland County, New Jersey as the site to realize his plan for a place of beautiful homes, manufacturies, businesses, schools, and churches, populated by hardworking, prosperous, contented citizens, all laid out with a mind toward beauty, and surrounded by thriving farms. "I desired to make Vineland so desirable a place to live in by reason of its various privileges, and over all to throw such a halo of beauty, as to make people loath to leave it." After purchasing 20,000 acres in 1861 from prominent Quaker landowner Richard D. Wood, Landis quickly set about drawing up plans, clearing a wide boulevard, and advertising agricultural acreage and residential and commercial… Read More

Octavo (8 3/4 X 5 3/4 inches) Philadelphia: Printed For Gratuitous Distribution, 1863. Original First Edition. 16 page sewn paper pamphlet in wrappers, minor discoloration to edges of covers, old $2 price, and old library call numbers written in pencil on top of front cover, old 15 cent price, and calculation figures not related to text written in pencil on back cover, contents clean and unaffected.

In this pamphlet, Judge Leavitt states his reasons (based on historical fact and the Constitution) for his ruling that denied a writ of habeas corpus for the defendant C. L. Vallandigham; leader of the "Peace Democrats," and Supreme Commander of the "Sons of Liberty."

The accused was charged with "mischievous disloyalty" in his opinions and statements; and subsequently arrested at the orders of General Burnside. Lincoln became involved when, in May of 1863, he wrote to Stanton stating that suspension of habeas corpus, as Stanton wanted, would not be necessary in this case.

Lincoln is not referred to in… Read More

Description:
"Pulcinoelefante" is an Italian publishing house founded by Alberto Casiraghi (or Casiraghy).
The books are hand printed using movable types on the high-quality Hahnemühle paper produced in Germany. Annually "Pulcinoelefante" publishes hundreds of small plaquettes formed by a text (aphorism or short poem), accompanied by small engravings or original drawings made by artists. Each edition is published in a very small number of copies hors de commerce.
Read More

Description:
Here is the notorious original 1927 pamphlet that set the Pacific Northwest literary establishment on its ear. Status Rerum. A Manifesto, Upon The Present Condition Of Northwestern Literature, Containing Several Near-Libelous Utterances Upon Persons In The Public Eye. By James Stevens of Washington, H.L. Davis of Oregon. Privately Printed For The Craft. The Dalles, Ore. Small octavo. 8 pages with cover. Limited to 200 numbered copies privately printed in 1927. This is #73.
Only ten copies in libraries, according to WorldCat databases. When published, the pamphlet was sent to newspapers and magazines across the Pacific Northwest and probably a few select places in California and the East Coast; most were likely tossed into the proverbial round file. It has since taken its place in Pacific Northwest history, being reprinted in the six-volume Oregon Literature Series anthologies done by Oregon State University Press in the 1990s, and still considered controversial today. Most interested parties will… Read More
