Rare set of 3 volumes of aromatic herbs from Kan'en Iwasaki's multi-volume botanical series Honzo Zufu: Hokusabu (Iconographia Plantarum), originally compiled from 1828 and later published in 92 volumes. This set of 3 volumes (volumes 6, 7, 8 in the series) includes 21 pages of text and indexes, and 100 color woodcuts of fragrant herbs or medicinal plants.Plants include angelica, peony, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, turmeric, jasmine, tulip, rosemary, and many more. The plants were used in Chinese traditional medicine or kanpo.Condition: Washi paper covers scuffed, but interior clean and bright, color plates vivid and vibrant.Kan'en Iwasaki or Tsunemasa Iwasaki (1786–1842) was a Japanese botanist, zoologist and entomologist. His botanical studies were influenced by Johann Weinmann.

Complete set of 8 volumes with 640 handcolored engravings of French costumes from the 5th to 19th century, from the reign of Clovis I to Louis-Philippe.Illustrated with all 640 handcolored plates by Leopold Massard (1812-1889), grandson of the famous engraver Jean Massard. Plates finely coloured by hand, with many finished in gold. The illustrations copied from authentic images on statues, bas-reliefs, tomb effigies, paintings, murals, miniatures, drawings, and prints. Collection of 96 engraved plates by Smith after original drawings by members of the Society of Antiquaries. Engraved title-page and 96 plates, of which 3 tinted (One duplicated plate bound in.) Plates include portraits of King Lud, King Richard II, King James I, Sir Thomas Gresham, William Earl of Craven, historian John Stowe, famous London buildings such as Bruce Castle, Sion College, Lincoln's Inn Gate, Bloody Tower, Newgate, Savoy Prison, Lollards Prison, old Tudor houses, ruins, gravestones, etc. The engraver John Thomas Smith was Keeper of Drawings at the British Museum, and this series of prints earned him the nickname Antiquity Smith.Condition: Leather spine with five-raised bands and gilt lettering, marble boards, scuffed and worn. Engraved plates mostly clean and bright with slight spotting and foxing to a few. Damp stain to lower edge of first 15 plates outside the plate area.

First thus with new half-page engravings by Viennese engraver Johan George Mansfeld after the originals by Swiss artist and entomologist Johann Rudolf Schellenberg published in 1785.
Complete with frontispiece and 24 fine plates depicting allegorical scenes with a skeleton of death (Freund Hein) visiting people from different levels of society.
Includes frontispiece Memento Mori, lovers, desperation, vanity, balloonist, schoolteacher, judge, womanizer, baby in swaddling clothes, monk, poor man, lottery player, Viennese and Roman women, loan shark, glutton, tightrope walker, Masonic lodge, press gang, Berthold Schwarz the alchemist, gentleman's duel, bookseller, woman teacher, quack doctor and the authors.
The final plate shows the author Musaus and artist Schellenberg in an embrace with the skeleton of Death.
