Paris, 1400. BOOK OF HOURS. Use of Paris)  In French and Latin, illuminated manuscript, on parchment France, Paris, c. 1400-1410 15 large miniatures by the Master of the Bible Historiale MS fr. 159 (as described by Les Enluminures) This beautifully executed and unusual Parisian Book of Hours was painted at the time of the Duke of Berry. The "realism" seen in the illuminations represents a special moment in Parisian art, one exemplifying its northern origins.  The miniatures are attributed to one of the artists responsible for the Bible Historiale also referred to as the Master of the Bible Historiale fr. 159 (Paris, BnF MS fr. 159).  The female patron who ordered the book appears twice in the miniatures. 224 folios, mostly in gatherings of 8 (i12), complete, pastedowns and two flyleaves at front and back, some catchwords, written in a dark brown ink  in a gothic liturgical script, on 14 long lines, by different hands, ff. 82-82v and ff. 219v-223v written by a slightly posterior  hand, ruled… Read More

Delightful drawing of a worried Santa standing near his illegally-parked sleigh, while a stern police officer writes out a parking ticket. Fine. HBS 67549. $5,000.

Second edition of Joseph Smith's revision of the Bible, often called the "Inspired Version." Thick twelvemo. 917, 286 pp. Original brown pebbled cloth, gilt-stamped spine. Front hinge repaired with tape, first 3 leaves with marginal tape repair, rear hinge split but sound, previous owner's contemporary inscription on front free endpaper, cloth with light wear. A very good copy. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints lacked the funds to publish Joseph's revision until after his death. The first edition was printed in Plano, Illinois in 1867. This, second edition has an identical title page to that of the first edition with the absence of Plano, Illinois and was possibly published in Lamoni, Iowa in 1882. Bushman, 142. Presentation copy to "A Vitroff / Bon Jour!/ 1971" by Dali. This copy with a full page original illustration by Dali in black pen on verso of front free endpaper, depicting three men and their horses crossing a bridge, while another person off to the side has wings and is fishing. Large quarto. (Measures 12 x 11 inches). Profusely illustrated in color and in black and white throughout. Thick illustrated silver paper dust jacket. Jacket and book extremities lightly rubbed. Small octavo 6 15/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 175 x 125 mm). viii, 378, [2, blank] pp. Seventy-six wood-engraved text illustrations after Arthur Hughes. This edition pre-dates that recorded by Sadleir as the first American edition and is almost certainly one of a few copies printed in England at the same time as the first English edition and sent over to the United States to secure American copyrights. The title-page has been re-set to include the American imprint and date, along with the list of other titles by MacDonald, but without mention of the illustrations, as in Sadleir's first American edition. The pagination matches that of Sadleir's American edition (undated, though he cites a presentation copy inscribed 1873), with the initial blank here wrongly bound in at the end. We could only find one copy of this at auction in the past 50 years and only three in libraries. Of the three copies in libraries, two of them lack the 3rd volume. Full contemporary calf. Both volumes with green and red morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Board edges stamped in blind. Previous owner's bookplate and old ink signature on front pastedown of each volume. Minor dampstaining to front blanks of volume I. Some general scuffing and rubbing to boards. Some light toning, mainly to endpapers. Overall very good. HBS 68661. $2,500.
