With 109 plates containing reproductions of 250 etchings. Each plate has tissue guard. Raised spine with five compartments, pressed title and hand tooled decorations. Original cloth boards with gilt pressed miniature portrait front panel. gte. xxiv + 124pp. Index. Handsomely restored with original leaves remarkably clean, showing no toning or foxing.

Remarkably well-conserved, as new copy still in publisher'sgift box. Elaborate mixed element floral cover design by Richardson K. Rome on green cloth. Text illustrtaions and decorations by Ethel Pennewill Brown. 8vo, gte, sides untrimmed, 76p. Unused, pages uncut, in orignal glassine wrapper all in as new condition housed in publisher's gift box, white paper with satin finish over cardboard, edged in gilt, top cover decorated with elements of Richardson's cover design, stated "Presenation Edition" An exemplar of the "gift book" at the commercial maturity of the decorative cover in American bindings. THE collector's copy.

Paris: Chez L'Editeur, 1814. Presumed First or Early Editions. Hardcover. Very Good. Undated, circa 1814, seven suites of 12 engraved plates each for a total of 84 later bound, probably late 18thC, in half red leather over marbleized boards. The binding is divided into two sections, the "front" section begun with a centerfold title page with a circular vignette, with the first suite of the five entitled "Suite: d'ouvriers de differentes classes". The printer is identified on the title page as "L'editeur, Rue St. Lazare Chaussee d"Antin, No. 42". The same title page, but with a different circular vignette begins the last two suites of engravings. The first of these two suites is entitled "Suite de Militaires de Differentes Armes." The individual plates, rectangular in shape and in general dimensions of 9cm x 6 cm, are centered on each leaf. Some loss to leather at spine ends and boards worn, binding firm and, most importantly, engravings unfoxed.

Inscribed copy to American film director (and fellow pilot) Tay Garnett (1894 - 1977). Spanning nearly 60 years, Garnett's scriptwriting and directing career moved from the silents to the heyday of the Hollywood motion picture studio to television; of the hundreds of projects he either wrote or directed, he is best known for directing the American noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946). As a young man he served as Naval Air pilot in WWI and worked as a cartoonist before finding work as a title writer for Mack Sennett Studios. Uncommonly found complete, scarcer still in decorated cardboard slipcases, which show some wear and some paper over board loss here and there. Individual volumes, 8 titles to each series, show the slightest edgewear top of spine, internals fine, apparently unused. First Series, 1951, is second editon (the first 1950). Second Series, 1951, is a first edition. First series designed by Newman Neame Ltd; Second by The Thanet Press.

NY: Harcourt Brace, 1956. Hardcover. VG+/VG+. First book of published plays - these for television, including "Trip to Bountiful" in its early days - from the prolific playwright (Pulitzer Prize for"The Young Man from Atllanta") and screenwriter (two Oscars for "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "Tender Mercies"). Rare association copy inscribed to actress and acting coach Tamara Daykarhanova, a Russian emigre and student of Stanislovski: "For Tamara and (unidentifiable Russian name, likely husband or partner) with my love, Horton. Jan 5, 1956" A Texas native, Foote studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse before moving to NYC where he studied at Tamara Daykarhanova Theatre School, where he was indoctrinated into technique learned by Tamara at Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre. Before writing drama for television, Foote had ana early acting career. Foote acknowledges Tamara in his memoirs written decades later. An uncommon association. Laid-in is advance copy slip form Harcourt Brace.

The printing by command of the King of the correspondence among and between: George Goring Earl of Norwich, Arthur Capel Baron of Hadham, Sir Charles Lucas, Baron Thomas Fairfax, George Montagu-Dunk, Earl of Halifax, et al between June 10 and June 23, 1648 as to events in the siege of Colchester during the Civil War after which battle Sir Lucas was executed. 8 leaves as 1 signature (apparently previously bound in unknown book or binding), 4to, [2], 13, [1] p, 18 cm (perhaps trimmed at top) with a woodcut border, printer's engraved headpiece and decorated capital on (A2). Less toning, wear or age than usually seen for material of this period. ESTC lists 9 actual copies either US or UK.

NY: Viking, 1951. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/VG-. First edition of two-time Caldecott medalist McCloskey's fifth book that he both wrote and illustrated. Inscribed to another Caldecott medalist Marc Simont and his wife on the illustrated half-title: "For Marc and Bee from Bob" Solid book. Dustjacket toned (more so rear panel), folds worn, chipped with loss at spine ends. Signed McCloskey firsts are rare; inscribed to other Caldecott medalist rarer still.

NY: Random House, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Isherwood, Christopher THE CONDOR AND THE COWS NY: Random House, 1949 First edition. A fine, unused copy in near fine unclipped dustjacket. Isherwood's travel writings through Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Laid-in is a ANS on a personal mailing card, postmarked June 25, 1949, with Isherwood's residential California address and phone number with old exchange printed at the top verso for message - 333 E. Rustic Road Santa Monica, California S. M 43913. Isherwood writes a chatty note to friend Hamilton Wright, confirmed "bachelor" with Manhattan address and Connecticut country house, wishing him well at Ham's Florida summer residence ("too hot for me. Here it's perfect" (meaning Santa Monica). He concludes " 'The S. American book will be appearing in the fall.

London: Printed by T. H. for Edward Dod, 1646. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Small folio, [xx] + 386, with decorated letters and head pieces. First edition, probable second state with the publisher's line reading in full "Printed by T.H. for Edward Dod, and are to be sold in Ivie Lane." (The probable first state, reads"Printed by Tho. Harper for Edvvard Dod."). With the license leaf in front and a blank in rear. Contemporary (likey original) full calf, double blind-ruled front and back, five raised bands, gilt titles and author/date. Description clipped from old book catalog states the book was rebacked which would be about 100 years ago. Front hinge revealed but holding. Minor, faint water stain top margin pages i - vii, rest quite nice.

Buffalo: The Courier Company, 1878. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. First edition, which Barnum published in a different form years before. 8vo, green cloth, ribbed on the horizontal, blind-stamped front and back, gilt titles to spine. xii, 324, 33 full-page illustrations. With complements ticket with Barnum facsimile signature tippe-in at title page. Corners modestly worn, covers lightly rubbed. Solid binding. And we thought we were through with the likes of him when his circus left the building. yeah right.

London: Published for James Watson by Frederick Farrah 0. Later Edition. Hardcover. Very Good -. Mid-to later 19thC edition, likely 1850-1870s. 8vo, blind-stamped, green ribbed cloth, gilt spine titles, yellow matte endpapers, vi, 202, 32, (8), frontispiece, two foldouts. Modest loss spine foot, corners gently worn, solid binding. Of the many editions of this important work first published in France in 1791 and partly translated by Thomas Jefferson , OCLC lists only 1 copy with Frederick Farrah as printer, and dates it 1900. This copy is undated but the binding suggests a binding typical of much earlier, plus there is an owner name dated Shanghai February 22 '76 which by period script and century could only refer to 1876. HISTORY OF IDEAS DEMOCRACY FRENCH REVOLUTION LAW GOVERNMENT SOCIAL CONTRACT.

Errata statement printed at bottom of xii. Top edge slightly darkened/soiled, and marbled boards a wee dulled. Internals fine. No names or bookplates and desirable thus.
