Hard bound in red cloth with black titling and gilt illustration that is fading. Edges of red board bevelled and a little frayed. There is no foxing, another plus. I provide all this detail because it is an expensive and sought-after book a collector would like to have in best possible condition, and I believe this is the best on the world-wide web at the moment. FIRST EDITION, solidly bound in green with four-colour illistration to front and gilt to spine. Book probably grades Very Good for age but has a corner bump you see on scan. Top and bottom of spine have the usual wrinkles, but other wise the book has no substantial defects. The frontis still has the full tissue-protection. All 20 plates are presnt and correct with no defects. General mild toning. Overall dull looking

Smooth cut top edges and untrimmed edges side and bottom. xiii+174+2 pages 22 illustrations 174 appendices/notes. very neat and has the strengthening strips front and back that I have seen on all copies and assume are a part of the publishing process. The book is in near perfect condition, but because the board has a small corner bump and some tinmy discoloration marks you may be able to see on the scans, I do not grade it FINE.

Privately published in 1932 by Major J.S. Matthews (City Archivist) "Copyright of Provincial Archives of British Columbia). A treasure of a survivor and in perfect gift quality. Some mystery exists over Matthews's work. Each of these volumes has a stereo-signed foreword by Matthews dated March, 1932. (He dies 1970) The foreword of volume 2 reads. "Early Vancouver" Volume Two. Its Reproduction--Five Copies "Early Vancouver, as in 1959.
Research indicates that Volume One was commenced in 1931 and consisted of two books, one in original typescript, which is in the city archives, a carbon copy was presented in 1932 to the Vancouver Public Library. SIGNED JUSTICE R on the front free end page and thus signed by author Rayne; as Dictrict Commissioner, Rayne was directly responsible to the governor for the administration of justice (divorce, marriage, thievery, homicide) in Ziala District, a region in the north-west of then British Somalia.  This is the first edition of a scarce book that gives an insight into colonial administration in British Somalia early 1900s. Book finishes with an account of author's dealings with the Mad Mullah (1919). That Was the first occasion on which the RAF was used for colonial policing. Group Captain Gordon led a squadron of twelve De Havilland DH9s, transported on HMS Ark Royal.  Book is in GOOD plus condition with 12 plates. The frontispiece is tissue-protected. Note rubbing on spine.

There is a large coloured fold-out map that is only GOOD with small tear IN THE BLANK MARGIN Large number of illustrations; every one checked and present in near-fine condition. Nine appendices. A terrific book. Front blue board with gilt illustration. Gilt titling etc on spine.. Corners bumped. No writing. Black front end paper stretches across inside board and page, as it should, and is cracked down centre but not open. That sound worse than it is. All it means is that the white shows along the crack.

The sub-title is "The Story of Walter Moberly and his share in the making of Vancouver," and the authors are stated to be Noel Robinson and "THE OLD MAN HIMSELF." Walter Moberly (1832–1915) was a civil engineer and surveyor who played a large role in the early exploration and development of British Columbia, including discovering Eagle Pass, now used by the CPR and the trans-Canada highway.
