California: Jo Anderson, 1914. Hard Cover. octavo. Blue pictorial cloth 4 full page color illustrations and many in black and white. The previous young owner has done a bit of neat coloring on twp of the black and white drawings. Other than this, condition is very good. Scarce.

London: John Murray, 1835. 4th Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 20 x 11.5 cm. Octavo. Four volume original cloth bound set with paper end labels tan . Half titles present in volumes II, III, IV. All plates are present which include in Vol I: 2 plates plus frontispiece (406 pages), Vol II: 4 plates (465 pages + 6 pages ads), Vol III: 3 plates, one of which is hand colored (455 pages), Vol IV 6 plates, 2 of which are hand colored (456 pages). Browning to the end labels. Foxing, mostly to the first and last few pages of each volume. Foxing to the frontispiece as well as plate VI in volume 2. Some scratch marks to the paste-down inside front cover of each vollume. Some discoloration and rubbing to the boards. Bindings are tight. Charles Lyell was instrumental in the popularization the idea that the past is the key to the present when in the field of geology. Chipping to the edges of the spine. Fading to spine. Corners are bumped. Previous owner's name on front endpaper. Piece of tape on page 173. Spotting to the foredges. Binding is tight. Scarse title. The author of this work, William Henry Chaney, is widely believed to be the father of author Jack London through his fourth wife Flora Wellman. Chaney denied this throughout his life and London took the name of his step father. Chaney is important in his own right being a pioneer and popularizer of astrology in America.

Livemont was known as the master of Belgium poster art and did many art nouveau style posters during this period. Pink ribbon is semi-attached. One page has loosened from tie. Some foxing. Light wear to area on back cover where a small sticker had been removed. Copy no. 321 of an unspecified publication run.

Paris: Orangerie,Cologne, no date. Limited edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Quarto. 88 pages. Decorated cloth covers. This is copy #58 of 200 copies of the Deluxe edition. This being one of the 100 copies containing two original engravings. Each dry point engraving is signed by Buffet. Text in German, French and English. 295 illustrations. Slight toning to edges of boards.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1911. Limited ed. Vellum. fine. Quarto. Bound in full vellum with elaborate gilt design and lettering to cover and spine. This is copy #515 of 750 copies SIGNED by Edmund Dulac. Twenty-eight color tipped in plates. A fine copy of one of Dulac's best books. Brown tie detached and laid in book. A bit of toning to the endpapers.

The Humboldt Publishing Co.,: The Humboldt Publishing Co.,, 1890. First American edition. Wraps. Good. Wrappers. Translated from the third German edition & edited by Frederick Engels. Four issues in the Humboldt Library of Science Series. These issues are 135, 136, 137 and 138 and are dated September 1, 1890 - October 15, 1890. This is a pirated edition and is the first edition printed in America of the first volume of Capital. The first "official" American edition was published 1889 by Appleton & Co. NY as a re-issue of the 1887 London edition with sheets supplied by a London company with a new title page and was actually printed in Scotland. There was also a hardcover edition published around the same time, precedence unknown. Spines and covers are taped and have chips missing. The third issue has three small holes through the cover and the first 21 pages of text which has done some damage to text. A rare set in any condition.

Limited to 500 copies bound in publisher's vellum with gilt design and lettering and signed by the artist Edmund Dulac this being copy number 83. Frontispiece and an additional 39 tipped in color plates. Gilt top foredge. Vellum boards are bowed. Lacking the ribbon. Scattered foxing to the text, not the plates. Some fading to the spine. Bit of discoloration to the edges of the front cover.

London: C. L. H. Wallace Philanthropic Reform Publisher, 1887. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Good. 22 x 14 cm. Octavo. 541pp. Bound in brown boards with embossed design. Housed in a modern orange-brown clamshell box. Fourth edition, published same year as the first. From the library of Carl L.. Weschke, founder of Llewellyn Publications with his name penciled onto the title page. There are a few instances throughout where he has underlined or bracketed text, not obscuring the lettering. Another previous owner's name also appears on title page. Head and tail of spine are chipped. There is a stain to the foredge which also effects the margins of a few of the pages.

(i-viii) 288pp. Without ads in rear but with a 1 page publisher's ad opposite title page. First edition, "Reprint A" as per BAL 5231. Chipping to the edges of the spine. Previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper. Rubbing to the bottom corners. Attached to the front fixed endpaper is an authorial signed letter, ASL, by Emerson reading: "My Dear Sir, I have only this morning received by letter from Providence confirming your statement, that their day is Tuesday, moreover, requesting a change of my day, and, as at ___ adviced I will come to you on Wednesday, 6th Dec. ___you do me the honor to make it important. Yours respectfully, R. W. Emerson

Presentation copy signed to the previous owners by B. F. Skinner "Fred Skinner" in red ink. Bookplate has been roughly removed from the rear fixed endpaper. Front flap of the jacket is clipped at stop and bottom. Fading to jacket spine. Some edgewear to jacket.

First issue "help" for helped on line 4 page 257. This is a signed presentation copy on front endpaper, "For Edward Eberhardt this book begins in 1912 and ended in 1914. The M.S. of which rests in the Library of Congress. W. Somerset Maugham. April 1946.". Spine has been professional rebacked with pieces replaced. There is some ink marking at bottom of half-title page; some of which has been erased. Two lines of ink on blank page following front free endpaper.

Beautifully bound in full green leather, gilt decorations and spine lettering. Publisher's signed binding, "Riverside Press". Five raised bands to spines. Silk moire free endpapers. Instead of fixed endpapers, leather boards are decorated on both sides. The deluxe edition, illustrated with frontispiece illustrations, some in color, and additional illustrations and facsimiles throughout. Spines have faded to brown or tan. Additionally, front and back cover of volume one and eleven have faded to brown. The tops of some of the pages in vol 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 show some light staining, not reaching the text. First six volumes are Poetical Works. Vols 7 & 8 Prose Works. Vol 9, 10, 11: The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri.

Volume 16 has a printing error to the title page which caused just that page to be creased and torn. Overall nice set, books range from very good to fine condition.
