Number 370 of 475 in beige cloth on Rives - light wear, faint soiling to boards - internally bright and largely uncut. The first edition of one of Genet's central works - along with Thief's Journal and the great short film Un Chant d'Amour,, it exemplifies the qualities most unique and magnetic about Genet - the inversion of ideals, the transcendence of the sordid. Venice: Cesarem Arriuabenum Venetum, 1518. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. [16], 143, [1] ff. (8vo) 14.2x9.5 cm. Full early vellum with minor repairs and wear to the spine, a bit of worming to blanks. An attractive early copy of Bonaventure writing on salvation. Saint Bonaventure was canonized in 1482, but not made a Doctor of the Church until 1588. Notes to title, endpapers, and occasionally in the margins, all in an early hand. Attractively printed with historiated initials, a few small brown spots, but generally quite clean. Worldcat shows only 5 copies in institutional collections. Size: Octavo (8vo). [4 leaves], 52 (of 53) leaves, 4pp table, 2 blank leaves. Rear blanks are worn. Light dampstains throughout, heavier in spots, but not obscuring any text or illustration. Wear and short tears in the margins to the early pages. 20 woodcuts, mostly of grafting methods (one plate repeated 3 times), and 12 vignette illustrations of the months. An advance copy (with s.p. on the rear cover) of the limited edition (though not on Marais paper) with plain covers and an interview and portrait of Wright. Lacking a glassine wrapper, but likely to have never had one. Light wear and age toning, inscribed by Wright to Françoise Sagan and additionally signed by the translator Helen Bokanowski. Slight browning to covers, but an attractive copy and a terrific association of two giants of 20th century literature. With an announcement for the book, a bit worn, laid in. Light browning to page edges and original covers, offsetting from the frontis, small section with a dampstain at the end of volume 2, including to a section of the Inferno plate and the two following plates. Some miscreases and light browning to some plates, but generally quite clean. The second edition of this history of Pisa, with many more plates (32 versus 16) than the original 1787 edition. 32 plates, many folding, plus the frontis including two impressions of 15th century plates, Baccio Baldini's Inferno, after the Camposanto fresco in Pisa, and St. Jerome Penitent, also attributed to Baldini. Contemporary gilt, acid calf with morocco labels, marbled endpapers. Spines a bit dry, wear at edges often heavy with loss of leather at corners, edges dyed red with some some leak into margins in a few spots, scattered foxing and toning to pages including to plates, though largely in the margins, a few minor paper flaws, creases, small tears at corners, endpapers lacking on vol II, a few hinges and joints are tender; mostly quite clean and still generally very sound and attractive overall. The first part, complete unto itself, of a two part incunabula first published in 1497. The second part, not present, is a political tract entitled De optimo statu et principe. The Declamatio is a dialogue between a philosopher, a physician, and an orator each arguing the primacy of their profession. In a 1/4 morocco slipcase and chemise. 12 (of 40 in the two part work) leaves. With a 1497 date in the colophon unchanged from the first edition, but thought to possibly be printed after 1500. A bit rough, but a complete and unsophisticated copy of the first edition with the publisher's list dated March 1, 1850 bound first.
