Description:
New York: Charles L. Webster & Co., 1889. First U.S. edition. Publisher's prospectus or salesman's dummy with half-title page, frontis illustration, title page, contents pages, "List of Illustrations" (explaining why there is no list of illustrations); Twain's preface, and a sampling of pages from the text interspersed with full-plate illustrations (versus inset, as they appear in the eventual publication). 16-page illustrated insert bound in at rear with 18 images -- each with a caption explaining its meaning by Fred Hall, Twain's agent at Webster. One stands out in particular, as the explanation is for a scene clearly not in the book ("This picture well illustrates a story told of Abraham Lincoln, An English nobleman said to him ,,,,,").Final leaf has "Publisher's Announcement" on recto and ad for the book on verso. Lacking the subscription forms, which should follow but have clearly been torn out, and one of the leather-spine samples from the front, which has clearly been removed. Front cover is… Read More

Description:
Buffalo: Shroud, Publishers, 1955. First edition in hardback of this, the first separate edition of a novella not published in Lovecraft's lifetime combining elements of horror and fantasy to illustrate the scope of humankind's ability to dream. Introduction by George T. Wetzel. One of the designated "50 Specially Bound Copies" with label pasted to colophon stating as such SIGNED BY THE EDITOR/PUBLISHER OF SHROUD, Kenneth J. Krueger (in red). From a total edition of 1,500 numbered copies, this being numbered 413 (the balance were issued in paperwraps). None of the copies (hardbound or softbound) were issued in a particular sequence and there seem to have been more than 50 hardbound copies, as they sometimes show up without the pasted label. The novella first appeared in August Derleth's Lovecraft collection BEYOND THE WALL OF SLEEP (Arkham House, 1943) and then in a "definitive version" with text corrected by S. T. Joshi in Arkham's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS (1964). 8vo black cloth lettered in gilt… Read More
