Edges of boards rubbed. 7.75" x 5.25" Borton served with the 24th New Jersey volunteers. This book centers on the Fredericksburg campaign [Nevins, Civil War Books, I:61]. Sketch of service with the 9th New Jersey Infantry [Nicholson, 92].

New Orleans: Selbstverlage des Verfassers, 1904. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Very Good. pp: 31, (1); text illus from photographs. Light wear to spine. Text in German. 9.25" x 6" Published in English in 1909 as The Settlement of the German Coast of Louisiana and the Creoles of German Descent. The author has been described by scholars as the leader and "standard-bearer of culture for the German community of New Orleans." This work expanded the definition of Creole, formerly reserved for those of French or Spanish descent.

March 24, 1924." The author served as 2nd Lieutenant in the 328th Infantry, 82nd Division, in World War I.

Small, private bookplate on front free-endpaper. 9.75" x 6.75" This second printing, preceded by an edition of 500. was limited to 1,000 copies, On the limitation page is a six-line inscription, signed by the author at Cincinnati, March 16th, 1932. Felix Moses of Kentucky served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.

NY: French Line, 1949. First Edition. Pictorial Paper Covers. Very Good. 20pp; illustrated throughout from photographs and full-color watercolor drawings by Richard Lindner. The text sets the scene as the Ship leaves New York harbor: "You are aboard the Ile de France--a completely rebuilt Ile de France." Described are: the Versailles Suite, the Chantilly Suite, the Cafe de Paris; First Class and Cabin Class dining and smoking rooms; theatre; reading room; gymnasium; tourist class salon, smoking room and bar. A 24-inch centerspread from a Lindner painting shows the Ile de France in full color. 12" x 8.25" Originally launched in 1927, the S.S. Ile de France was converted to a troopship in 1941. In 1947, the ship was returned to France, rebuilt, and launched on her second maiden voyage in 1949. This brochure celebrates the post-war, transatlantic Ile de France.

In part: "...reposing special trust and confidence in the skill and patriotism of J.S. Anderson, Jr. of the Mirror of Stonington, Conn., do hereby appoint him...Special Representative of the division of co-operation of the press, committee on publicity, Connecticut State Council of Defense...." Large embossed seal. Signed in full by Holcomb, witnessed by R.J. Dwyer, Deputy Secretary. 11.75" x 9.5" Holcomb (1834-1932) was the 66th Governor of Connecticut.

This is the tale of a Frenchman and two boys who journey from Le Havre to California in search of gold. We are told of their hard work at the gold mines, the joys and travails of mining life, and their sundry adventures. Bound in elaborate, pictorial black cloth, stamped in gilt and colors on both covers and on spine; inner rear hinge repaired, otherwise near fine condition. 7.75" x 4.75" This is Dan Volkmann's copy with his Golden Bear bookplate. Volkmann spent 39 years collecting a complete first-edition set of Californiana books called the Zamorano 80--a feat accomplished by only three other collectors. [Gumuchian 1159. Sabin 12350.
