New London, Connecticut: Samuel Green, 1795. First edition. Early American imprint (1795) with emphasis on American pronunciation of the English language. The author, in the preface, recognizes distinct regional differences even within the American mode of speech - "The pronunciation of the southern states of English America is almost as different from that of the New-England states, even among the learned, as any two dialects of the language of any illiterate nation can be supposed to be : and yet both those parts of America abound with men of bright genius, large mental capacities and profound learning". The author also recognizes the diaparity between the written and spoken English language, and attempts to teach new English readers a consistent method of pronunciation based on a system of rules set forth in the book. The author describes the natural state of the human mind as generally good but ignorant and prone to vice unless it is educated and enlightened to cultivate a sense of religion and love of truth (this in an incredibly simplified synopsis of the author's propositions). Full calf with gilt-lettered red spine label, raised spine bands, [4], 15, [37], 344 pages. Covers edgeworn and joints weak, front cover held by binder's cords, text block sound with no loosened pages, pages clean with some age-toning and a fairly faint dampstain to the lower right hand area through most of the first half of the book, affecting only the lower three lines of text at the most, no chips or tears. . France: N.P., 1717. Second edition, 1717. Half-Title: Moral Pratique des Jesuites, Tome Cinquieme. In French. First published in 1671 in Holland, the first edition being exceptionally rare [Sabin 10804]. Full contemporary calf with spine labels, five raised spine bands, marbled edges and endpapers, xxiv, 517, [7] pages. Covers rubbed and a bit crackled from past dryness (now stabilized), joints rubbed, small chips to corners and spine ends, very short surface split to front joint at the top, text block firm, pages have some age-toning and occasional foxing, old price in ink at far upper corner of preliminary blank. Externally fair to good, internally very good.. Hard Cover. Fair. 16.5 cm x 9.5 Cm.

Includes inhabited woodcut initials throughout, some additional small woodcuts, and a printer's device on the title page. Title page dated 1580; colophon dated 1558. Full contemporary or slightly later flexible vellum covers with maroon spine label, [28] + 468 pages numbered on rectos only (numbers to 234), a total of 496 pages. Vellum grubby, spine label barely readable, diagonal closed tear to spine above the spine label, no front free endpaper, sound text block, both pastedowns have chips or tears, pages generally clean with some minor dampstaining mainly to the top edges of a dozen or so pages toward the middle, very old ink doodles on the final blank and lower margin below the colophon, minor finger soil. Revised, and with a preface by Jeremy Collier; and with an Apology for the Philosophical Writings of Cicero by Henry Dodwell. Includes the frequently-missing frontis portrait of Cicero and the four pages of publisher's advertisements at the back. Contemporary or similar period binding in paneled calf with gilt-stamped spine lettering, five raised spine bands, tooled floral designs at outer corners of both cover panels, outer edges speckled in red, [78], 368, [4] pages. Rubbed at the extremities with chips to spine ends and vertical crease to spine, joints a little tender but covers well attached, name on front free endpaper, title handwritten on front pastedown, margin chip to page 149/150, pages age-toned (some quite browned) but clean and unmarked.. Scarce title by this itinerant preacher and poet original from North Carolina, featuring a long poem full of historical references and with an overtly moral message. Early 19th century binding in full calf with tan spine label, 219 page plus errata. Covers rubbed, spine dried (but stabilized) and chipped at the extremities, spine label lightly chipped around the edges, free endpapers removed, section of title page - a horizontal strip that removed words "primeval and present" and "mankind" from the title - torn away, text block sound, pages foxed and lightly age-toned but clean, ink spot on title page below "poetical", names (Wm. Hutchinson, James Hutchinson) on front and rear pastedowns, no other markings. Sabin 63639.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

First edition of this three volume set bound in publisher's three quarter green morocco leather over green pebbled cloth, gilt decorative cover lettering, slightly raised spine bands with gilt lettering, compartments ruled in gilt and black, all edges gilt, brick red endpapers, 488 + 460 + 491 pages. With around three hundred engravings per volume, plus accompanying text, this Victorian era set provided those at home to view sights they had never seen before, or perhaps provided a preview to a European trip in the Grand Tour tradition.
