Description:
London: Hookham New Bond Street , 1787. fFull leather.. Very Good. C.R.Ryley. 12 volumes bound in six. Each book starts with a copper engraving by C.R.Ryley, engraved by Skelton. Complete. Bound in period full leather with red labels, with plain end papers. Inscribed in ink by ‘Henry Monkton’. In excellent condition. Berquin (1747-1791) specialized in writing childhood literature, this was unusual in this period. His children's books enjoyed great popularity and were often reprinted throughout the nineteenth century in many languages. Percy Muir lists the first English translation ‘L’Ami des Enfants…’ (1782-3) being published in 1786 in 24 volumes. This was printed a year later. The British Library does have a later copy of this edition. Provenance : Property from the estate of the late Lady King of Wartnaby.

Lithographed throughout with pictorial title 'Old Derry Down Derry' and 71 of 72 plates only (lacking 'Cape Horn'), printed on rectos only on thicker paper. The two 'Old Man of the West' plates with correct images, plates 20, 25, 34, 64 & 65 with parts of the verse redrawn ,four being the same plates as in the first edition, foxed in parts. A very good impression on antique laid paper with a eagle and snake watermark. My conservator suggested this was 17th century paper.There was light foxing near the number which has been cleaned. (See photo with watermark) Signed and numbered in ink. "The south bank of the Thames, at Bermondsey round the curve of the muddy shore, barges are lying under warehouses. In the foreground, four men are repairing a barge, while another stands on the deck, working a pump." (Hardie). The two-page centre plate is a colour chromolithograph stage proscenium, complete with an orchestra in the pit and boxes at the sides. Inserted via string ties in the centre is a chromolithographed booklet which changes the scenes when its pages are turned. Some are half pages that change characters in the scene, a forerunner of the technique used by Goodall in his toy books. The scenes in the insert show the complete story as described in the text.
