Occasional mispagination in Part II but all catchwords correct, bound to style in full modern 2 tone calf (see image), blind panelled on covers, raised bands to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. Pages cut down at sometime with loss to bottom of title pages, slightly affecting image, and slight loss top edge of title pages, pale brown staining affecting most of text to some degree, text all legible, 2 blank pages which separate the two parts are heavily stained, a few small ink annotations, otherwise a good copy. This is an abstract of the Year-books down to the writer's own time, and is principally based on the work by Fitzherbert bearing the same title. It also contains some valuable original matter. First published in 1568, Brookes work completely abridges the Year Books of Henry VIIs and Henry VIIIs reigns. Under four hundred and four alphabetical headings, Brooke abridged close to 21,000 cases. Abridgements such as that of Brooke set the pattern for contemporary digests of case-law. Two parts in one volume.Illustrated title pages in decorative woodcut architectural borders, woodcut initials. Thick 8vo. Modern brown morocco, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering. London: In Aedibus Richardi Tottell, 1576. Second Edition of Brooke's abstract of the year-books down to the writer's own time. (Sweet and Maxwell I, p. 187. STC 3828; Beale R471 and R472.) It was based principally on Fitzherbert's work, but contains much new material. Brooke's work fully abridges the Year Books of the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. He abridges over 20,000 cases under alphabetical headings. Coke considered it "a worthy and painful work and an excellent repertory or table for the Year Books of the law." A little-known Shakespearean association. The closing lines of Shakespeare's Prologue to the last act of Henry V are as follows: "Then brook abridgement, and your eyes advance / After your thoughts, straight back again in France." "Then brook abridgement" was Shakespeare's hidden joke for the… Read More

Description:
BASILEAE: APUD NIC. EPISCOPIUM IUN., 1558. In 16. Dim. 17x12 cm. Pp. 32 (n.n.)+350+2 (n.n.). Numerose note manoscritte all'interno. Marca editoriale all'ultima carta. Titolo manoscritto al taglio inferiore. Opera collazionata e risultata completa. Legatura in pergamena. Non comune. Copertina in piena pergamena con… Read More

Description:
LUGDUNI: APUD SEB. GRYPHIUM, 1548. In 16. Dim. 17x11 cm. Pp. 402+(14). Read More
