Rare books from The Plantagenet King

Macgibbon and Kee. First edition and first print published by Macgibbon & Kee in 1966. This is a near fine copy. The wrapper is usually prone to creases and wear. This wrapper has only minor and occasional creases to the panels and spine. The text block is free from foxing as are the pages. There is no foxing or spotting and no ink except for an inscription from the author, dated in the year of publication and also on the title page where he has signed his name. Overall a near fine copy.  Alfie tells the story of a young womanising man who leads a self-centred life, purely for his own enjoyment, until events force him to question his uncaring behaviour, his loneliness and his priorities. A film starring Michael Caine was released later on in 1966 to much acclaim. A rare title to find in such nice condition and signed by the author.  . Near Fine. Collins. Published by Collins in 1970. This is the first UK edition and first print. It is in very good or better condition. The complete wrapper has no tears or chips and no loss at all. There is some rubbing along the edges and spine ends and the laminate has started to peel along the top edge. The book is in very clean and bright condition, as are the pages. There are no previous owner's marks or ink. The jacket has been price clipped. Overall a very good or better copy.  This is the first book, where it all began for the wonderful Mog. This is the familiar tale of how poor old Mog gets under everyones feet and is a general annoyance, until she bravely scares off a burglar mid schenanigins and gets the adulation she richly deserves complete with a lovely medal! London: Hamish Hamilton. FIRST UK EDITION. The wrapper is in excellent condition with no toning or marks. It has not been price clipped. The book has very light toning to the text block. Also a light indentation mark to the side text block. A small penned mark to the lower text block. Overall a near fine copy with this one being particularly rare due to the author's inscription on the front free end paper.  A very sharp copy of Capote's classic crime title. The non-fiction novel is about the brutal slaying of the clutter family by two  would-be robbers. It would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced many writers since. The book was successfully adapted into a film of the same name in 1967 and again in 2005 as the biographical portrait Capote. London: Jonathan Cape. First UK edition. The jacket is in excellent condition and hasn't been price clipped. It is crisp. There is no sunning or browning. There is a tiny tear to the top of the spine and a small mark to the right side of the front panel. The book is very clean with no previous owners inscriptions and only a smattering of foxing marks to the upper text block. Overall this is a near fine copy. London: George Allen and Unwin. First UK edition. This is a near fine copy. Issued without a jacket. The boards are in clean condition with very few marks on the front and back boards. A better copy than is usually found. The pages are also clean and without marks, foxing or ink. A near fine copy.  First published in the US two years earlier, it is a childrens story about a girl that whereever she points something happens. Illustrated by William Pene Du Bois. London: Macmillan. First UK edition. The Victor Reinganum dust wrapper is in near fine condition. It has a crease to the bottom of the front panel. Along with very minor rubbing to the spine ends and corner tips. The jacket is complete and not price clipped. The book has a small number of light marks to the top of the front board. The pages are very clean without foxing or ink. Overall a near fine copy. Muriel Spark's best known works and a highlight in modern first edition collecting. With the fantastic dust wrapper artwork. It was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 novels of the 20th Century. And also adapted to the big screen in 1969.  . Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1961.

Longmans, Green & Co. First UK edition published by Longmans, Green and Co in 1900. This is a very good copy. The boards have light marks. There is a scratch about 3 inches long on the back board. There are three pin holes on the spine. The spine has cracked on the inside board however the book is well bound. There is a previous owners name on the front free end paper. There is the odd foxing mark throughout the book with moderate foxing to the first couple of pages. Overall a very good copy and complete with all fold out maps.  A very good copy of this first edition. This is Churchill's account of his time served in the second Boer war including his capture and unlikely escape from a prison camp. Lutterworth Press. First editions published by Lutterworth Press between 1956 and 1963. This is a very good set. The dust wrappers for all six volumes are complete with very little loss. The books are also in respectable condition. Guiana (1956) has a short tear to the front panel and light wear to edges. It has a sellotape repair to the reverse. Dragon (1957) has the spine ends reinforced on the reverse with tape. The spine is a shade faded. Paraguay (1959) has a short tear at the top of the back panel. There is a faint small date stamp to the fep. Paradise (1960) is faded to the spine of the jacket and tiny loss to spine ends. Madagascar (1961) is price clipped and has a small booksellers label to the inside board. Capricorn (1963) has a piece of tape to the bottom spine end on the reverse of the jacket. Viking. First edition published by Viking in 1988. This is a very near fine copy. The jacket is completely unfaded, a very rare attribute with most copies having some sunning at the spine. This copy is the same deep blue tone across all of the jacket. There is tiny amounts of wear to the corner tips. The book is in excellent condition with only a very small handful of tiny flecks to the text block. The copyright page shows a full number line down to 1 as called for, for a first edition. The author Salman Rushdie has signed his name without dedication to the title page. Signed copies have become uncommon in recent times and are scarce in this very near fine condition.  Rushdie's award winning book that has been perceived as blasphemous by some. Chatto & Windus. First UK edition published by Chatto & Windus in 1930. This is a very good or better copy. The wrapper has small amounts of loss to the top and bottom of the spine. There are two splits to the edge of the inside flap. There is a couple of small chips to the corners along with a tear to the inside lower flap. There are two tiny holes to the spine. Overall though, the jacket is fairly complete and not price clipped. The panels are clean and without marks. The book is in excellent condition, with only a bumped top corner for wear and some light sporadic foxing to the side text block. The dark green top stain is bright and the pages are very clean. Overall a very good or better copy.  Faulkner's first novel, originally published in the US in 1926, it wouldn't be until 1930 that it was published in the UK and most likely in a small print run. Eyre & Spotiswoode. First editions published by Eyre & Spotiswoode between 1946 and 1959. The set consists of Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950) and Titus Alone (1959). It is a fantastic near fine set. Titus Groan has the first state jacket. It has a mark to the back panel.  Gormenghast jacket the spine is sunned. All three volumes are excellent and have not been price clipped. The pages are clean and without marks. One of the greatest fantasy works of the twentieth century, Mervyn Peake's three volume sequence has been adapted to the stage, screen and radio over the years. William Heinemann. First edition published by William Heinemann in 1956. It is a very good or better copy. The dust wrapper is mostly complete with a tiny chip to the bottom edge of the front panel and a couple of tiny chips to the top of the spine. The spine is a shade faded. The book has two bumped corners. Otherwise it is clean and without marks. The pages are without foxing. A better than is usually encountered first edition.  Smith's classic children's adventure about Dalmatians, that has been made into an animated film by Disney and then latterly a film starring Glenn Close as Cruella. Methuen. First edition published by Methuen in 1929. A near fine copy. The wrapper is complete with no loss. It is not price clipped with the correct price displayed on the spine of 5/- net. There is the odd dirt mark to the front panel but overall it is remarkably clean and more so than is usually found. The spine is without any browning at all. The book has a neat contemporary inscription. There is the odd foxing mark and patch of browning but again overall it is in excellent condition.  Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne's play based on The Wind in the Willows. On the inside flap Milne says "Theres enough of Kenneth Grahame in it to appease his many admirers, and enough of me in it to justify my name on the title page". Collins. First edition published by Collins in 1962. This is a near fine copy. The wrapper has a small chip to the top right hand corner of of the front panel. It is price clipped and there are a small handful of spots to the back panel. Otherwise it is in a clean and crisp condition. The wrapper is a better example than is usually found for this title. The book, in blue cloth is excellent with no foxing, browning or ink. It is a superb copy.  Juster's fantasy tale about a boy called Milo and his journey through a magic tollbooth. It has already been adapted to the big screen but the film made in 1970 was widely panned. A remake has been long mooted and kicked about by Warner Bros. There is minor wear to the spine ends and corners. The blue cloth boards of the book are in very good shape. The binding is square and tight. There is a previous owner's name and date to the half title page. On the front free end paper, R.A.F pilot Douglas Bader has signed his name without dedication.  The life story / biography of fighter pilot and Battle of Britain hero Douglas Bader, written by Paul Brickhill (author of Dam Busters and The Great Escape).
