Description:
n.p.: Mossman, 1870. Very good. Single sheet, folded to approx. 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches, pierced in a lace pattern in the center and at the edges, and embossed with flowers and leaves. In the center is a young girl holding a circlet above her head, affixed to the card only by her foot, which is standing on a group of clouds, also attached only in sections, to give a three-dimensional effect. Beneath is a scroll reading, "If I lose you, I am lost". The scroll, girl and clouds are entirely hand-painted; flowers and leaves are hand-colored. With 'Mossman' lightly blind-embossed at the rear of the page. There is a tiny break in the fragile border paper lacework, image slightly dusty, else in very good condition and unused. Scarce.

Description:
London: R. Wilks, 1816. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. 3 volumes. xxiv [25]-326; xvi [17]-381; xvi [17]377pp. Engraved title pages in each volume. Engraved frontispiece of the Death of Sir Launcelot present in Volume 1, of the Parting of Tristan and Isolde in Volume 2, and of Prince Arthur Obtaining the Sword in Volume 3. The folding plate of the Round Table is also present in Volume 1. Publisher's original printed paper boards, basically a flimsy binding intended only to preserve the textblock until the set could be rebound in leather pursuant to the buyer's wishes. The boards are worn, rubbed and soiled; the upper board of Volume II has been supplied from another copy and remargined to fit, the paper spines are largely perished. All boards have been professionally reattached with archival tissue. The textblocks show the usual offsetting of the engraved titles and frontispieces to each other as well as some foxing, but are otherwise fairly nice. Housed in a custom leather backed clamshell case, gilt spine… Read More

Description:
Londres: Guillaume Pickering, 1835. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 volumes. 12mo. Illustrated with lithographs of the manuscripts, some with initials colored by hand in red and blue. Title page in Volume 1 in both English and French.. Publisher's original cloth in a small sand grain design. This is clearly Winterbottom's Type 'M' (Tomlinson). Krupp (p.30) notes this as San1, but without a Winterbottom cross-reference. She ascribes an appearance date of 1850 for this early design; to find it on books published in 1835 is a treat. That it would appear on a Pickering work should be no surprise. Pickering started experimenting with bookcloth as early as 1823 through his binder, Archibald Leighton, who was responsible for many innovations in the design and use of early bookcloth. The text constitutes mainly the remains of Thomas of Britain's Tristan Romance, composed in the 12th and 13th centuries in Norman French and Greek, here edited and rendered in the originals by Fr. MIchel. This is a… Read More

New York: The Humboldt Publishing Co, 1890. First US edition. Hardcover. Very good. First edition printed in America. Tall 8vo. xviii, 506pp. Brick red ribbed cloth blocked in blind on the boards and with a gilt spine title with black lines. Translated from the German by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling. Edited by Frederick Engels. Cloth is rubbed at edges and hinges else this is a very good copy. The bibliography of this edition is a little complex. In 1890 the Humboldt Publishing Company published this edition in English of Das Kapital in four separate parts bound in stapled wrappers. Later, probably the following year, some copies were disassembled and bound into a single volume, as in the present case. The wrappered edition contained publisher's ads. These were sometimes bound into the single volumes, sometimes not, and, in one case, only a couple of ads were bound in. Some bindings were blocked in black on the boards, some not. There are reports that the publisher reprinted the text in 1891 or… Read More
