Basle: Holbein Publishing Co., 1946. 9 pages of text, 10 tipped-in colour collotypes, all contained in a portfolio, which is formed from cream paper over stiff card boards. Designed by Max Bill, Zurich, English version by Robert Allen and Douglas Cooper. The paper covers are age toned, with some staining to front, bumping, some loss to extermities. the contents are also age toned to edges, plates not affected. Very scarce in any condition. [685] . Engraved title, 30 plates, final plate with old repair (not affecting image), oblong folio, old half calf gilt (pencil note states - bound by Hunt? of Norwich Sept. 16, 1876), all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, armorial bookplate of Sir Francis Boileau/Lord Nugent, also bookplate of Bryan Hall, together with signature and bookplate pf Michael Valentine Briton Riviere (1919-1997). The Plates include five for Prometheus Chain'd; four each for Suppliants, Seven Chiefs Against Thebes, Agamemnon, Choephor; five for The Furies; four for The Persians. Each has a caption identifying the characters and quoting from the play in English. Each Plate carries the publisher's imprint of J. London: William Griggs, 1885. [2], 33 pages explanatory text, frontispiece and 40 chromolithographic plates. Original illustrated boards rebacked with maroon cloth, new cream endpapers. Soiling, wear to boards, some chipping, soiling to edges internally. Manwaring Shurlock wrote `Tiles from Chertsey Abbey Surrey representing early romance subjects. The book followed the accidental discovery of Medieval tiles on Chertsey Abbey Estate in 1852. Shurlock had been studying encaustic tiles in Eynsham, Oxfordshire, but moved to Chertsey in 1853. Soon after his arrival Manwaring met the owner of the Abbey site, Mr. Samuel Grumbridge, and chanced to see tile fragments in his yard. The fragments were picked out and washed, and Manwaring managed to piece together about 30 nearly perfect subjects. Mr. Herbet Minton, the ceramic manufacturer, and the sculptor Sir. Perkin Architect 1830'' at head of title, some light spotting to text and marginal soiling, modern half morocco with elaborate gilt-stamped label to upper cover, spine gilt, uncut. A new edition of Plaw's third book of designs in which as usual, order and symmetry are adhered to, and the irregular, broken effects recommended by some are forcefully rejected. Price £4:4, with an inked note stating - 'Only 250 of this Work are printed.' 10 text pages, 9 plates, with tissue guards, Aquatint vignette on the title-page. Etched plan on p. 10. The plates, usually numbered [1-6], 7-9, were drawn and etched by Nash, with aquatint shading and other work undertaken by other hands, most by Frederick C Lewis. Wilkins, best known for his design of the National Gallery, London, was the author of several works on architectural history, and as a commentator on Vitruvius he had the distinction of being the first to interpret the passage in Book V concerning scamilli impares in terms of a device for the correction of otical illusions in architecture.
