1581 Pompey Trogus Macedonia ROME Justin Nineveh Bongars Universal Histories

Pompey Trogus was a Gallo-Roman historian living during the first century BC. He is most remembered for his 'Histories' which discussed the origins of the world, establishment of world empires, and the rise and fall of military powers. Trogus discussed the parts of the world the Alexander the Great conquered, Ninus, the founder of Nineveh, the development of the Assyrian and the Macedonian Empires, as well as extensive coverage of the early Roman Empire.

In the centuries following Trogus, the Roman historian Justin edited these 'Histories' and compressed the enormous 44-volume work into a manageable tome with an added preface which explained that he attempted to collect the most important and interesting parts of Trogus's 'Histories.'

Spine lettered. xii, 752 p.p., plus [36] p.p. index. [11] engravings [9 folding] incl. frontispiece. The life of Emperor Justinian I and Theodora and the history of Justinian Law. empress of the Eastern Roman Empire. Johann Peter Von Ludewig [1668-1743] was a German lawyer, historian and scholar. He Chip on top right corner of front board [approx 1 inch width] with smaller chips and wear to edges. Small tear to edge of p. 43, text unaffected and small hole to bottom of p. 353. Light foxing. Pages browned. Otherwise a very good copy.

Excellent provenance, with the bookplates and ownership signatures of Mr. Sharon Turner, noted British historian and author of the important "History of the Anglo-Saxons, published 1799-1805. --- The French historian and journalist René Puaux (1878-1936) worked for the internationally renowned Parisian newspaper "Le Temps" and was a fervent supporter and advocate of the Greek cause during the Balkan Wars. His reports from the front were collected in two publications, "Dans les Balkans" 1912-13, and "La malhereuse Epire", which was translated into Greek. In 1919 he was sent as correspondent to Asia Minor and on his return journey crossed Thrace and reached Mesolongi. In all he made seven trips to Greece, a country he loved passionately.
