Bayard Taylor was a 19th-century travel writer whose abundant notes and reports have been referenced for decades since the mid-1800s. Taylor's writings have even been quoted by politicians and authors who supported his racial discriminatory views.

In 1854, Taylor published 'A Journey to Central Africa' which was a detailed report of his time in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan in 1851. This work provides incredible details about the native tribes he encountered, his experiences on the Nile river, and various discoveries. This book includes an impressive folding map, illustrating his journey's route, which extended beyond Khartoum.

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1900. This is a very rare edition published in 1900. Narrow 12mo size pictorial hardcover with bright gilt titles on spine and front cover; 160 pages. Phillips Brooks (1835 - 1893) was an Episcopal clergyman and Rector at Boston's Trinity Church. Well known during his lifetime, he delivered a sermon at the funeral of United States President Abraham Lincoln. He was a requested speaker worldwide and delivered a sermon at Westminster Abbey. He was elected the sixth Bishop of Massachusetts in 1891 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Brooks is remembered in the Episcopal liturgical calendar on January 23. Several schools were named in his honor as was the Phillips Brooks House (now the Phillips Brooks House Association, a student volunteer association) at Harvard College, his alma mater. Bound in the publisher's brown, blind-stamped cloth, with title on the spine in gilt. Spine lettering fading; edge wear, small loss of cloth at the spine's crown and foot. Occasional dots of foxing, but the text is generally clean. Binding holding firm. Author's first book, a collection of shorts, written when he was 24. His most famous work, RAGGED DICK, would set his theme of a poor boy, going from "Rags to Riches" by working hard and doing the right thing.

Spine volume numbers stamped in blind, as are the spine and board border fillets. Volume 1 has a pull at the spine's crown, with a loss, and a small area on the front board where the leather has peeled partial away. Volume two was protected by an old, handmade coarse paper jacket, which deteriorated, but served its purpose admirably. Scattered foxing throughout both volumes. Both hinges and joints remain strong. An attractive set. OCLC locates just one set, at the Nationale Biliotheque, with other institutions holding either volume 1, or volume 2. Vol. I: 332, Vol. II: 316 and Vol. III: 349pp. A very scarce set on the German ghost, fairy tales and ghost stories influenced many of England's gothic writers. The Bottle Imp story was clearly used by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Among its unnamed translators are Thomas De Quincy, Robert Browning, and several others. Copies are found only in the British Museum, the Bodleian, the Boston Public, and the Library of Congress. The date had been excised(?) but is 1823. Bound in 3/4 green polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, double brown morocco spine labels gilt, other compartments gilt decorated, all edges marbled with matching endpapers, marbled boards rubbed, spine rubbed or nicked, with a few chips to heads.
