Pro Gymnasio Argentinensi primum conscripta, jamque denuo ab Authore aucta & recognita. Editio novissima prioribus corectior & distinctior. Amstaelodami, apud Joannem Wolters, 1714. Front endpapers bear a 1726 young scholar's note as well as the bookplate of oil tycoon John W. McReynolds; a few additional, small inky spots and one brief note within the page block, none obstructive; ffep and first blank leaf bear open tears at bottom free corners and a short closed tear at foreedge of title, and both endpapers show light foxing, with residue of decoration at page block edges, otherwise sound, two-color printing with some spectacular ligatures. Firmly bound octavo in contemporary calf, five bands, spine panel modestly crazed with a title plate chipped at the right but with gilt remaining; mottled nutmeg-colored boards have fared much better, bearing only a scuff at the… Read More

1854 1ed Journey to Central Africa EGYPT Sudan Ethiopia MAP Nile Bayard Taylor

Bayard Taylor was a 19th-century travel writer whose abundant notes and reports have been referenced for decades since the mid-1800s. Taylor's writings have even been quoted by politicians and authors who supported his racial discriminatory views.

In 1854, Taylor published 'A Journey to Central Africa' which was a detailed report of his time in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan in 1851. This work provides incredible details about the native tribes he encountered, his experiences on the Nile river, and various discoveries. This book includes an impressive folding map, illustrating his journey's route, which extended beyond Khartoum.

Description:
Privately Printed for Bernard Davis, 1969. Hardcover. Very Good. Collectible first edition, first - and only - printing of noted Edgar Leeteg art dealer and agent Bernard Davis' Leeteg of Tahiti. "First edition 1969" so stated on copyright page. Davis partnered for many years with Leeteg in marketing many of his velvet paintings, over 1700 at the time of Leeteg's death, and becoming, along with Leeteg, wealthy during the Tiki craze of the 1940's - 1960's. Called the "Remington of the Seas" by James Michener, the American Gaugin by Bernard Davis, and the Father of Modern Velvet Painting, Leeteg stands head and shoulders above almost every competing velvet painter, past and present, his Polynesian themes with beautiful, Tahitian women and, less so, warriors masterfully accomplished. Values of Leeteg's paintings, though selling for many thousands in his lifetime, dropped in value from the 1970's until recently, but now enjoy a resurgence that has put them out… Read More
