A beautiful Dutch whaling scene in watercolour. It shows five large Dutch ships, five smaller rowboats, four whales on the surface being harpooned by the sailors in the rowboats, and two bears in the foreground in the lower right corner. The bears are no doubt supposed to be polar bears, but the artist made them look more like brown bears. While the drawing is signed in black ink in the lower right corner, virtually nothing is known about the artist, except his or her name from the signature: "H. C. Tuyssen(?)".The present scene was inspired by and/or adapted from a famous set of Dutch whaling prints (ca. 1720/25) by Sieuwert van der Meulen and Adolf van der Laen. The initial composition of the scene with the bears on the ice in the foreground reminds us of the print titled "Seylen in 't ys, en soeken na de walvis” (sailing through the ice, and searching for the whale), but it is not a direct copy. Complete with 21 fine full page wood cut engravings showing Aufseeser's remarkable Modernist style, akin to a tapestry pattern using puzzle shapes to form the image. A bright, tight near fine copy in publishers grey paper covered boards with black line illustration and lettering to front board, the rear left plain. Grey cloth spine with minor rubbing and wear to top and bottom. Neat two line inscription on front blank endpaper but overall a lovely example of this, the artist's very rare first book. An interesting set of illustrations by the influential designer and artist Aufseeser (1880-1940), an important figure in the development of the modernism movement. A rare book. Only five physial copies listed on Worldcat, 3 in German Libraries and two in the USA, at Princeton and The New York Public Library.

One of only 4 copies, on Japon, with extra suites of the 1st state proofs and the 2nd state proofs and the original copper plate used for the etching on page 7. Numbered from II to V. This is copy number IV. From a total edition of 147. With 16 drypoint engravings printed in blue by Louis Icart of which 5 full page and 11 in-text. The etchings were printed by French masterprinter Manuel Robbe. The 32 full page 1st and 2nd state proofs are printed in black. All prints protected by tissue guards. Loose folded sheets in wrappers with silver title. In publishers marbled chemise and slipcase. 23 text pages. Sheets measure 29 x 21,5 cm. Extremely rare copy with the extra suites and the original copper plate. Spine of chemise a bit sun faded, lightest wear to corner tips of slipcase. A very fine copy in collectors condition. .
