Montpleasant, Ohio: Elisha Bates, 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist, from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical, The Moral Advocate, in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers.) Bates' only book, this volume, was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book, dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bates, who favored Orthodoxy, was a staunch opponent of… Read More

Description:
Germantown, PA: Michael Billmeyer, 1795. Hardcover. 16mo. Original full calf with both metal clasps present and fully functional. 537pp, (5pp). Front and rear flyleaves are fairly modern crude replacements; text block moderately age toned throughout, with mild occasional foxing. A tight and attractive second printing of this noted "New Testament" issue from the press of the well-known Philadelphia printer (1752-1837); the printing office and home in which this was printed still stands today; it was built in 1730, purchased by Billmeyer in 1789 and is supposedly the site from which George Washington directed his Continental Army forces in the Battle of Germantown. When Billmeyer and his father-in-law set up their Lutheran press in the 1780s, they acquired the surviving equipment of the renowned Philadelphia printer Christopher Saur Jr., whose press the British had destroyed in 1777. The two small leather straps on this copy are old but not original, but all the brass clasp parts are present and… Read More

Description:
1795 ENORMOUS McDowall Family Bible Kennicott IRISH Dublin Ireland Illustrated

The 'Kennicott Bible' has long been known as one of the most lavishly illustrated Bibles of the 18th-century. Benjamin Kennicott was a well-known English Hebraist who studied the Hebrew Bible and made his life's work studying and comparing variants of Hebrew manuscripts. And while mass-produced editions of Kennicott's Bible were not produced with the same vibrancy and page-to-page illustrations as the original, Family Bibles with Kennicott's translations are still popular and widely read.

This 1795 Dublin printing was published by Zachariah Jackson who included 50 impressive, full-page engravings in this 'authorized' edition.
