Contemporary tree calf prize binding, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, red morocco label, gilt floral roll to boards, gilt crest of the Terra Nova School to the upper board, marbled endpapers and edges. Frontispiece and illustrations throughout from photographs. Prize bookplate. Very lightly rubbed at extremities, spine a little faded. Excellent condition. A handsomely bound copy of a later impression, originally published in 1907. This lovely little book is "an attempt to describe by camera and pen the recent rambles of two friends, during the months of May and June, in search of birds and their nests for the purpose of photographing them in and near London". It includes a large number of photographs of British birds (usually stuffed specimens) as well as their nests, eggs, and habitats.

William Joseph Schaldach (1896-1982) was a writer on art and outdoor sporting, editor for Field and Stream, and most notably an important American wildlife artist. He studied at the Art Students League under John Sloan and George Bridgman. The image of the drypoint offered here is 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches and is matted 13" X 10 3/4" and shrink-wrapped. Feodor Dmitrievich Pleske was the first Russian ornithologist to be published in the English language when he wrote this book under the name Theodore Pleake. It is a detailed monograph on the birds of arctic Europe and Asia with the results of Baron von Toll's Russian Polar Expedition of 1900-1903 incorporated in the account. The book is in generally good condition: internally clean and tight, with rubbing along edges of boards (worn through to boards in a few spots; relatively minor fraying of cloth at head and foot of spine..
