Collates as [6] + A-E10 (in 2s) (OT) + A-A2 (in 2s) (Apocrypha) + F10-B13 (in 2s) (NT and Indices) + 36 engravings. Includes frontispiece, engraved title page, frontispiece to NT (torn with loss at bottom). Marbled end papers. Scattered foxing, especially to plates. A few page edges uneven at beginning, and a few old page repairs. As with the copy described by O'Callaghan, some of the illustrations state "Engraved for Fowler's Family Bible." others for Teal's edition. "Issued in numbers and had more than 3,000 subscribers." Claimed to be the largest Bible ever printed. Wright p. 209; O'Callaghan p. 382-385; Hills No. 434. Bound in full contemporary brown leather over board with large raised bands ruled in gilt to spine, designs in compartments and red morocco spine label with gilt title. Worn at edges, and cracking at hinges. This edition significant for Seventh-day Adventists because it was the "large" Bible that Ellen Gould White held when she had her first vision (See Norma J. Collins: Heartwarming Stories of Adventist Pioneers, Review and Herald Publishing, 2005) Scarce.

Description:
1736 BIBLE & BANNED Commentary Jansenism Catholic 8v Pasquier Quesnel French
Pasquier Quesnel was a 17th-century French Jansenist best-remembered for his commentary on the New Testament. This commentary was written to push Jansenist theology and doctrine which, unfortunately, seemed to form numerous phrases that were considered heretical by the Catholic Church. This French edition of the New Testament includes Quesnel's commentary, published in eight tomes.

Description:
Very Good 1714, Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. There is the expected foxing throughout, and a former owner name and inscription in pencil at the front and a name alone in pencil at the… Read More

Joseph Sharpless, No. 4, Franklin-Court, (Market-Street, Between 3rd. and 4th Streets, South Side, Philadelphia, 1813; First American Edition; 223 pages; original leather boards; red morocco title label. Noteworthy Bible History instructional, adapted for the understanding of everyday people and the young. First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. His grandson, Baker Peter Smith, in an 1852 memoir of Sellon reports that he (Sellon) was facetiously referred to by his colleagues as "silver-tongued Sellon" for his ability to bring his hearers to such heights of enthusiasm with his oratory that donations poured in.… Read More
