Small quarto, 2 pages, with a conjugate blank leaf. Thin strip of tissue-paper on the outside rear page, and minimal loss to this blank leaf near the centre of the hinge (both as a result of having been mounted in, then removed from, an album); light creases where folded in four for posting; in excellent condition. Humboldt writes to introduce the geologist Alexandre Brongniart, remembering with gratitude the assistance rendered by le Duc to himself and his friends and collaborators, [Louis Joseph] Gay-Lussac and [Christian Leopold von] Buch. He hopes that M. Brongniart, 'l'homme célèbre', who wishes to visit Vesuvius and the lava flows of Ischia, will be afforded similar kindnesses. Nicola Filomarino, duca della Torre and principe di Boiano, devoted much of his scientific career to the study of Vesuvius and the volcanology of Campania. 1972. Near Fine. A warm, gracious 2 pg. ALS from the photographer Paul Strand, referencing --among other things-- an evening with Hart Crane. Strand is patiently responding (from France) to a Vietnam vet (whose 2 letters are here included) who asks if he and his wife might work for an aging Strand in any capacity. Strand's August 1972 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" letter in response is bright and clean and has held up nicely. His hand is strong and the ball-point ink completely legible. Also includes the original enevelope (addressed in Strand's hand and postmarked "Yvesines", France).

Letter, 1990. Letter. Very Good. Unmarked. Signed letter from the artist Gordon Onslow Ford (1912-2003) to writer/artist Amy Ione in response to an article about his work. Folded into four panels. Includes comments on his view of art theories. British-born painter Gordon Onslow Ford was the youngest and last surviving member of the original Surrealist artistic group, led by the poet André Breton. Also included in the group were Matta, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Tanguy, Jean Arp, and Salvador Dali.

No Place[Bolinas, Calif.]: No Publisher[The Author], No date, circa 1968-1988. Title from the first line. A single sheet of thin smooth white cardboard, with manuscript poem in black marker and five red chop marks creating the image of a tree. Near Fine, small rubs and staining to green marker border. RARE. One of only four other known original handwritten versions of this poem, the others located by OCLC at SUNY-Buffalo, Ball State Univ., Univ. of North Carolina, and Simon Fraser Univ. However in those other versions Kyger also used yellow, brown and blue markers in addition to the red and black ones. The poem was published as a broadside in 1979 by Cranium Press, that version bearing no resemblance to the handwritten originals. A poem that arose from Kyger's interest in Zen Buddhism, as evidenced by the SUNY version's inscription reading "Joanne Kyger again in hindrance practice 11.2.88." Stuttgart, Germany: Edition Dornberger, 1971. Original folded silkscreen Christmas card . Dated, inscribed, and signed by famed American artist Robert Indiana: "25-XII-'73. Agnes. Greetings. So nice to receive your note--the "Art" sculpture is at Colby for '75 Inaugural (on loan). Bob." Indiana created Christmas cards that he sent to his personal friends, and Agnes almost certainly was the important Canadian-American artist Agnes Martin. I have not yet determined which sculpture is referenced in the note. The silkscreen is in near-fine condtion: clean and bright, with a hint of wear along the folding edge; the fold is slightly askew revealing a bit of the white margin of the note.. SIGNED.
