Lovely copy of a rare book on Indian flora by talented amateur female artist Lena LowisWith 30 elegant botanicals by Lena Lowis, lithographed by David Blair, and printed by M. & N. Hanhart. Among the exotic flowers portrayed are poinsettia, flame lily, bougainvillea, hibiscus, clustervine, coralbush, Rangoon creeper, Nepal trumpet flower, white orchid tree, elephant creeper, oleander, Darwin pea, bottlebrush and Eastern prickly pear.No publication date, but preface dated 1878.Lena Lowis (1845-1919) was a talented writer and botanical illustrator. The majority by talented woman botanical artist Miss Sarah Drake.
Includes 21 exotic species of showy orchids (Cattleya, Anguloa, Cypripedium, Dendrobium, Rhyncholaelia, Trichopilia, Cycnoches, Acanthephippium, etc.), as well as peony, gardenia, fire lily, bellflower, passionfruit, desert rose, indigo, balsam, snake gourd, speedwell, primrose, etc.
The Botanical Register was launched by Sydenham Edwards in 1815 following his departure as main illustrator to William Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Edwards edited the magazine and drew most of the plates in 14 volumes until his death in 1828. John Lindley then took over as editor on a further 19 volumes under the title Edwards's Botanical Register from 1829 to 1847. By 1832, Miss Drake had become the main illustrator of the magazine, and she would go on to draw over 1,000 plates.

Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

This is an ORIGINAL Swedish one-sheet movie poster for "SAN FRANCISCO", the 1936 MGM film starring Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, Spencer Tracy, Jack Holt and Ted Healy. Directed by W. S. Van Dyke. Expertly linen mounted. Image: 27 1/2" x 39 1/2". Art by Eric Rohman (1891-1949), a Swedish artist who specialized in Swedish movie posters. He estimated that he had done over 7000 posters in his lifetime. Signed in the print. "San Francisco" was released in Sweden in November,1936. Now bound in one volume, recent brown morocco spine with gilt lettering and five raised bands, on modern marbled boards, gilt page edges all around. 22.5 cm. First edition. Some of the plates have been trimmed slightly. Plate 1 of Vol 4, mis-numbered in the plate as No. 4. Generally very good, occasional browning on a few plates.
