When issued, it was banned in some countries as the most sexually explicit of Fleming's novels. There are three dark spots to the outer pages that seem to be part of the paper itself, otherwise clean. Signed in my presence by Clarke. The black and white American covers with red end-papers were printed simultaneously and are both true first editions. Later printings lack the red end-papers. The American edition precedes the British edition by three weeks. Winner of the 2005 Hugo awards for best novel as well as the World Fantasy Award and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award.

Very Good, with pages toned and cloth rubbed at the extremities. In a supplied later state dust jacket with price printed horizontally; lightly edgeworn and lightly edge-stained, and a bit rippled. Michener's first book, a Pulitzer Prize winning collection of short stories about the Pacific Campaign in World War II.

First Edition, First Printing with the words "First Published 1950" printed on the copyright page. The original dustjacket has very minor wear to the head and base of the spine and corners. This First Issue dust jacket has a light "coffee cup" stain towards the 9s.6d. net printed price on the uncut bottom front flap. The printer appears to have had some difficulty with the name Cantwell. Also of importance: note the DJ has a spelling error "deeps" for "depths" in the final sentence of the 2nd. para. The book, 254 pp., 8vo., is in excellent condition. The binding is tight, with no cocking or leaning and the boards are crisp with only minor wear. A great copy of this TRUE FIRST EDITION that precedes the American edition by 3 days. Ex libris Stanislas Joly bookplate inside front cover.

Provenance: From the library of David Gilson and Chris Viveash, renowned Jane Austen bibliographers and scholars.2 volumes bound as 1 in contemporary brown cloth binding, appearing to be a remainder binding, of which only 2 are know (Gilson p.42). Title in gilt to the spine. There is some rubbing and soiling to the binding and the spine has been re-backed with the original spine relaid, with a little loss of the original spine at the foot. Inside, there is some spotting, and old water staining to the lower margins throughout, although the pages are in remarkably clean condition for a book of this age. The endpapers are somewhat soiled, with a few discreet and sympathetic repairs. The modern bookplate of Chris Viveash is affixed to the front pastedown, with a pencil annotation just above.
