London : Simpkin & Marshall, 1825 Volumes I - VII of the 1st edition of Maund's Botanic Garden ranging in date from 1825 to 1836 (Vol VII is undated) with 167 of 168 fine hand coloured plates. It was originally issued in parts and these volumes are in what looks like an original publisher's cloth binding which is worn and disintegrating with some poor stitching, so this set has been priced to take account of rebinding costs. The book is in a square octavo format and text pages are printed on one side only. The contents are clean and bright with beautiful colouring on the plates (faults are listed in the detailed description below). There is some offsetting where particularly strong colour has been applied and shows through to the back of the plates. All have a decorative title page and an additional title page. Johannes Antonides van der Lindon was a 17th-century Dutch physician known for his studies in botany and herbal medicine. While he is best known for his medical bibliography, he also wrote extensively on types of medical treatments and remedies. His 'Selecta Medica' was a teaching and instructional medical handbook designed specifically for Dutch physicians. Linden includes examples of treatments for bladder stones and urinary tract diseases, effects of fresh and saltwater, as well as the studies of other prominent doctors such as Guillaume Rondelet.

With 2 decorative frontispieces, 1 decorative title, and 106 hand coloured plates. The title pages are undated but Vol I has a preface dated 1820 and the 1st edition was produced between 1816 and 1820. This copy is in new half calf with gilt lines title labels and volume numbers to spines. The marbled paper matches the marbling on the page edges. New endpapers. All the plates are in very good clean condition and are well coloured. The paper quality varies with the paper in the first half of Vol II being noticeably toned and prone to light spotting. Rare complete copy of Keika Hasegawa's Keika Hyakugiku (100 chrysanthemums by Keika)(The British Museum only has Volumes 1 and 2, the Smithsonian only 2 and 3.)75 colour woodblock prints (all published), including eight double-page, from this seminal book on the cultivation of chrysanthemums. Volumes 1 and 2 published in July 1893 and Volume 3 published in December 1903. Chrysanthemum cultivation came to Japan from China in the 8th century and the flower was later adopted as the Emperor's crest. Over the centuries, extraordinary hybrids of elegant shapes and vibrant colours were produced, many of which are recorded in this book.Little is known about the artist Keika Hasegawa. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Complete with 509 hand-coloured copperplates engraved by Charles Mathews after botanical illustrations by Mathews, Isaac Russel (an Oxford glass painter) and William Alfred Delamotte. The plates were reputedly hand-coloured by Baxter's daughters and daughter-in-law. George Claridge Druce in The Flora of Berkshire, 1897, writes, "The plates of this work, although of unequal merit, are in many cases very excellent and possess a special value, because each figure is drawn from an individual plant, the locality or origin of which is usually stated."First issued in parts from 1832, and later in book form from 1834. Index in Latin (missing A to D, starts with Eruum), Italian, French, Spanish and German.Perhaps a later pirate copy of Adam Lonicer's Herbarum, arborum, fruticum, frumentorum ac leguminum, Egenolph, Frankfurt, 1546. Lonicer (1528-1586) married printer Christian Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm. From 1551, the firm published herbals under Lonicer's name.Early editions had the plant names printed Latin in Roman and Italic type, and German in Schwabacher type.
