Illustrations, index, 119 color plates (2 are double-page). The endpapers are tape-stained and there is a previous owner's name. Internally the book is bright. Edited by Harriet M.L. Bolus & Alice M. Cyperaceae is a family of monocot flowering plants known as sedges, which superficially resemble grasses or rushes. Some members of family Cyperaceae are on Maine's threatened and endangered list, including those illustrated in this book: eleocharis quingueflora; rhyncospora capillaceae; scirpus pendulus; scirpus longii; eleocharis tuberculosa; rhynchospora macrostachya; cyperus erythrorhizos; lipocarpha micrantha; and finkristylis antumnalis.

Frontispiece attributed to Michael van der Gucht (1660-1725) Flemish engraver working in England.. Octavo panelled calf blindtooled (tips worn, neatly rebackacked I matching leather). Frontis, titlepage +[14] +352pp some misnumbered but collated complete. Text foxed & browned but paper still quite crisp, stable & tight. The plates printed on different paper and are all unfoxed, and aside from slight marginal browning are whiter than the text. *Translated by William Fleetwood from Curiositez de la Nature et de l'Art sur la Ve´ge´tation, but author's & translator's names do not appear. This English version pre-dates the French first edition as given in British Library catalogue, and the chapter order does not correspond with the French.

Minor edge tears and chipping. No lettering or printer's attribution. 'Made in Sweden' stamped on verso; lower right. Artist's tiny initials 'MRi' in stylized script tucked in below the roots. A beautifully rendered composition of two entire plants of Eriophorum angustifolium (Common cottongrass or cottonsedge): illustrating one in elegant and ephemeral blooming phase and one in seed phase, all surrounded by enlarged details of pods and, blossom.  single sheet

Rodolfo Pichi Sermolli fu un grande botanico specializzato nelle felci Pterodofite. Viaggiò per tutto il mondo in cerca di campioni da utilizzare per il suo erbario: in Africa (Libia, Lagon Tana in Etiopia) Messico, Hawai, Nuova Zelanda, Polinesia ecc… Le più prestigiose istituzioni come il British Museum o il Smithsonian Institution di Washington cercarono di acquistare l'erbario ma lui decise di donarlo all'Università di Firenze.
