Measures around 8" by 5 3/4" by 1 1/4". Green soft leather binding, gilt edging and detail to boards, gilt college crest to front board, red leather label and gilt lettering and extensive detail to spine. Some scuffing, a little marking, small signs of shelf-wear but overall colouring of leather and gilt detail very vivid apart from rubbing to small part of crest on front board. Binding firm. Corners slightly bumped. Book fans out a little towards outer edges, slight curvature to boards. Page edges and endpapers have attractive marbling. College prizegiving bookplate to front pastedown. The prior "negotiation" conference model was again adopted. All the high judges of all the high courts were adjourned to the Exchequer Chamber to hear the case. This meant that Bacon represented the king as Attorney-General and addressed his pleading to all the nation's elite judges convened in the Exchequer Chamber. The dispute involved the deepest and most sensitive aspects of the new post-Tudor British government. The gravest problems concerning the boundaries between king and Commons, law and prerogative were at issue.This led the way for James of Scotland to become king of England. It is the basis of the law in the U.S. that people born in the U.S. are considered citizens.

The hinges are sound. The front pastedown of each volume has the bookplate of "Vice Admiral Young" showing a shield with a stag above and three lions within. The crest motto is, "Prae Utilitate Patria." William Young (1751-1821) was an officer of the Royal Navy. He saw action in the American Revolution as well as the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The Rowntrees of Scarborough The background to the originator of the Scarborough history. There have been records of Rowntrees living in North Yorkshire for centuries. One particular Rowntree – Peter (who was a yeoman, in Easby during the reign of James 1) seems to be the common ancestor of many distinguished people. London: Printed for T. Kelly, 1821. First Edition First Printing . Leather Bound. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Octavos. 664; 719 pages. Hardcovers bound in full tan leather by Root & Son, London (signed on the leather turn-ins of the front paste downs) and hosued in a brown cloth slipcase. The slipcase shows moderate wear and is quite sturdy. Raised bands on the spines with 6 compartments and intricate gilt tooling. Red and green leather labels on the spines, and "1821" is stamped in gilt on another burgundy label at the foot of the spines. All edges gilt. Light wear to the bindings. The headcap of Volume II is a bit rubbed, but overall an exceptionally clean and attractive set. Gilt inner dentelles. Blue marbled endpapers. Text is clean. Illustrated with 26 full-page engravings, including engraved title page. There are 11 engravings in Volume I and 15 engravings in Volume II.

Hardcovers bound in full tan leather with dual burgundy labels and with elaborate spine tooling in gilt. The bindings are rubbed and show old scuffing. Hinges rubbed but sound. There are a few heavier gouges in the leather on the boards of Volume II. Brown endpapers. The second front flyleaf of each volume has two signatures. One reads "Herbert Henry Watford / 1850." The other is a later signature in blue ink, "R. A. Sutherland. Portrait frontis in Volume I, and Volume II has a frontis engraving of Mary's handwriting. Endpapers a bit foxed; the text appears generally clean. A sound set with good shelf appeal.

London: Henry Colburn and Co., 1821. Leather Bound. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavos. [xvi], 477; 454 pages, indexed. Hardcovers bound in full red straight grained morocco leather with spine titles and tooling in gilt. The bindings are rubbed and show old scuffing and some stains. Hinges rubbed but sound. There are a few heavier gouges on the boards. All edges gilt. Plain gray endpapers. Text is toned and shows some foxing. Some gatherings slightly sprung. Collates complete with 18 full-page engravings (portraits: 10 in Volume I and 8 in Volume II). A sturdy set. (The author's name is not given, but this work is attributed to John Galt).

London: Printed for Carnan and Newbery, 1770. Leather Bound. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mos. 312; 280, [7] pages. Hardcovers bound in original full brown leather with raised bands on the spines. The spines have burgundy leather labels and circular gilt stamped designs (similar to suns) in the compartments. The bindings are rubbed and bumped but sound. Heavier rubbing to the hinges, but the hinges are holding well. The title page to Volume 1 has an early owner's signature of "Wm. Veale Trevagler". A signature on the front flyleaf of Volume 2 looks like "G. P. Curring". There is a prior owner's library label (very small bookplate) on the front pastedown of Volume 2 reading, "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall. No...." (with a pencil shelf number added). Although this has the style of an early label, the British Museum notes that Kenneth Monkman lived from 1911 to 1998.
