Alfred Mame, Tours, 1868. Large 8vo (250x157mm), pp. (6), 494pgs Red leather and rich gilt ornamented panels on spine. All edges gilt, Numerous in-text and plate illustrations by W. Freeman and Jules Noël depicting scenes of oceanic life and marine animal life. Third Edition of this handsome volume by Mangin (1824-1887). The work deals with the mythical history and myths of the ocean, its main phenomena (tides, currents, climatic variations, storms, marshes, etc.), marine fauna and flora (fish, fossils, crustaceans, shellfish, shells , Octopus, sea serpents, cetaceans, seals, sea birds, etc.), the relationship between man and the sea (sailing, fishing, hunting for cetaceans and amphibians, ocean diving etc.) .There's a previous owner's bookplate and a stamp at the front. Otherwise a nice, clean edition.

London: Richard Bentley, 1853. 2 Vol. 3/4 Leather over marbled paper covered boards, and eppr. First English edition of Alexandrine des Echerolles' memoirs of the Revolution in France. Alexandrine des Echerolles (La Ferte Hauterive, south of Moulins-Allier) was 13 y.o. when the Revolution forced her father, aunt and brothers to take refuge in Lyon. Her father had been elected colonel of the National Guards at Moulins, but when he was threatened with imprisonment he fled to Lyon then Switzerland, and left his daughter in the care of his sister. The aunt was murdered by the revolutionary court for refusing to reveal where her brother was living, and Alexandrine found herself alone, and relied on family and relations to taker her in.

Condition: The Book LACKS a front cover board, and the back cover is barely attached but present. The book is in very good condition, all the prints and tales are present and in VG condition, the binding and spine are holding.

Beautifully engraved illustrations of Spanish buildings, monuments and landscapes, one large folding map of the roads of Spain (395 x 490 mm), one of Madrid (225 x 345 mm) by P.F. Tardieu, 12 plates of bullfights, full-page map of the bay of Cadiz, double-page view of Gibraltar by Tardieu (200 x 310 mm), full-page map of the attack of the naval batteries before Gibraltar and one of the Alhambra, and 2 full-page plans of Spanish architecture. The author had been the French Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Spain in Madrid.Condition: The atlas is complete and there are no tears. There are varying degrees of foxing- from mild to light to almost none on the various engravings (please see photos.) Likely the original boards - calf spine over marbled paper. The front board is attached but just barely.

Privately printed with wood-engravings by Lynton Lamb. A fabulous account of Hugh Walpole's early life and a must read if you are a fan of his work. In near fine condition- a small chip at the top of the spine is the only blemish. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole was an English novelist. A prolific writer, he published thirty-six novels, five volumes of short stories, two plays and three volumes of memoirs. His skill at scene-setting, his vivid plots, his high profile as a lecturer and his driving ambition brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. A best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s, his works have been neglected since his death.

The cloth wrapped slipcase box is discolored on the bottom. Unmarked, some discoloration to the leather at the bottom of the spine of the comedies volume.

In very good ++ condition with very light spotting affecting a few pages- otherwise excellent, binding sound, great illustrations, gilt titles - a nice antiquarian set.

Oblong, 16mo. Unmarked and in VG condition in the original paper jacket - torn and fragile. the front board is very slightly bowed. "No Thanks contains some of Cummings's most daring literary experiments, and it represents most fully his view of life―romantic individualism. The poems celebrate an openly felt response to the beauties of the natural world, and they give first place to love, especially sexual love, in all its manifestations."
