Baltimore: William H. Purnell, 1866. Pamphlet. Good. 7 p.; 23 cm. In March 1866 William H. Purnell (1826-1902), who had been appointed postmaster of Baltimore by President Lincoln in 1861, was up for confirmation to a post, possibly assessor of internal revenue for Baltimore. The only objection to him was a charge that he had made a speech at a Democratic and Conservative meeting in Oct. 1865. He offered this reply, explaining how he happened to be present when a speaker denounced President Johnson for his actions toward the southern states after the Civil War ended and consequently intervened to prevent violence. He also offered a statement covering his vigorous support for the Union during the war. Scarce. In Good Condition: soiled and creased; closed 1-cm. tear from fore-edges; solid.

1864 CIVIL WAR Burning of Chambersburg MAP Confederate General McCausland CSA

The Battle of Gettysburg has long been considered the most iconic Civil War to take place in Pennsylvania; however, other battles and raids helped shape the outcome as well. In July of 1864, in the town of Chambersburg, confederate general John McCausland lead a charge on the small town and burned most of the buildings to the ground.

American historian B.S Schneck published an account shortly after the events in Chambersburg, identifying both the egregious and compassionate Confederate officers, the destroyed buildings, and the Union responses to the destruction.
