Description:
Baltimore: William H. Purnell, 1866. Pamphlet. Good. 7 p.; 23 cm. In March 1866 William H. Purnell (1826-1902), who had been appointed postmaster of Baltimore by President Lincoln in 1861, was up for confirmation to a post, possibly assessor of internal revenue for Baltimore. The only objection to him was a charge that he had made a speech at a Democratic and Conservative meeting in Oct. 1865. He offered this reply, explaining how he happened to be present when a speaker denounced President Johnson for his actions toward the southern states after the Civil War ended and consequently intervened to prevent violence. He also offered a statement covering his vigorous support for the Union during the war. Scarce. In Good Condition: soiled and creased; closed 1-cm. tear from fore-edges; solid.

1863 Confederate 1ed Southern CIVIL WAR History CSA Pollard Jeff Davis Rob E Lee

Published during the American Civil War, "Southern History of the Great Civil War in the United States" by Edward Alfred Pollard provides an interesting look into the Civil War from a distinctly 19th-century Southern perspective. Without aiming for literary flair, Pollard provides a narrative of the war's first year. Through comprehensive chapters, he outlines historical contexts, political intricacies, and key battles of the conflict, offering insights on figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, and Stephen A. Douglas. The book explores reasons behind the war, the socio-political climate, the engagement in battles, and the political and economic strategies of both sides. It also examines various military movements, financial conditions, the role of European influence, and the impact of the war on the North and South. Pollard concludes with reflections on the war and its moral implications and presents prospects for… Read More

"Sherman and His Campaigns: A Military Biography" by Col. Samuel Millard Bowman and Lt.-Col. Richard Biddle Irwin is a meticulously detailed account of the military endeavors of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman during the U.S. Civil War. Liddell Hart.
The authors go beyond narrating Sherman's military successes; they intricately explore his character, shedding light on his leadership style and the respect he commanded from his soldiers. The book also offers a defense of Sherman against critics of his truce agreement with J.E. Johnston in 1865, highlighting the authors' commitment to preserving historical accuracy. Description:
1864 CIVIL WAR Burning of Chambersburg MAP Confederate General McCausland CSA

The Battle of Gettysburg has long been considered the most iconic Civil War to take place in Pennsylvania; however, other battles and raids helped shape the outcome as well. In July of 1864, in the town of Chambersburg, confederate general John McCausland lead a charge on the small town and burned most of the buildings to the ground.

American historian B.S Schneck published an account shortly after the events in Chambersburg, identifying both the egregious and compassionate Confederate officers, the destroyed buildings, and the Union responses to the destruction.

1866 BEAUTIFUL General Ulysses S Grant CIVIL WAR Military + Sherman & PROVENANCE

"I only knew what was in my mind, and I wished to express it clearly"
― Ulysses S. Grant

Joel T. Headley, an American historical author, was known for his biographical works on important American military leaders, such as Grant and Sherman. His major contribution, of course, is his account of the Civil War, entitled 'The Great Rebellion'. Additionally, one of his best works was his perspective on the life of Ulysses S Grant following the Civil War. This book describes Grant's responsibilities in the War as well as his integrity as a commander. While this book focuses primarily on Grant, it also includes "an accurate account of Sherman's Great March from Chattanooga to Washington".

A rare first edition on the life of General Grant prior to his presidency!

Description:
1866 Robert E Lee 1ed Confederate Campaigns CIVIL WAR Virginia MAPS McCabe

"It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it."
– Robert E. Lee

Following the American Civil War, several biographical sketches were furiously published on the lives and military involvement of notable war heroes, officers, and battles from the Civil War. No other confederate officer was more widely studied than Robert E. Lee.

James Dabney McCabe Jr, a Confederate supporter, was a prolific writer on a variety of subjects. His "Life and Campaigns of General Robert E. Lee" was first published during Lee's life, just a year after his surrender. Per Nevins,
"More campaigns than life; the author attempted to present the events of the war in a fair and dispassionate manner."
