In mid-19th-century England, there was a growing demand for literature on home-making and female interests. Numerous magazines and periodicals were published to try to meet this demand. One such work was Sam Beeton's "Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine" – a magazine that, according to Diamond,
"targeted middle-class women and was an immediate commercial success, with its clever mix of French fashion plates, dressmaking paper patterns, designs for fancy-work, excellent recipes (by Mrs Beeton), and serialized novels."
This tome contains 23 full-page engravings illustrating dresses and high fashion.

Conrad Tiburtius Rango was a 17th-century German historian known for his treatises written against Catholicism and Calvinists. While serving at the Royal Gymnasium in Berlin, he published his bizarre and rather obscure treatise on wigs. First published in 1663 in Magdeburg, 'De Capillamentis' was the first treatise devoted strictly to wigs and hair pieces covering all aspects from materials, uses in daily and theater use, history and origin of wigs, and much more.

A very good selection of handcoloured costume plates from a rare volume
The plates were published in booklets of 6 every 20 days: 2Fr 50 centimes for subscribers to the Bibliotheque universelle des Voyages, and 3Fr for non-subscribers. It's rare to find complete sets in any condition.
With 47 plates (of 90 published), one duplicated (Pl. 81)
All very finely hand-coloured with vibrant hues
Mostly by Leopold Massard, a few by Ferdinand Wachsmuth and J. David
Many of the titles on the plates do not match the subject. Thus an Indian Raja is labeled Emperor of Japan, a Burmese noblewoman described as Japanese, California mislabeled as Mexico, Rio de Janeiro as Cincinatti, Alaska mistaken for Greenland, the Marshall Islands for Byron Isle, Polynesia for South America, etc. This seems to be common with other issues of these plates.
