Description:
1868 FASHION English Woman Domestic Magazine Illustrated Dresses Beeton Recipes
In mid-19th-century England, there was a growing demand for literature on home-making and female interests. Numerous magazines and periodicals were published to try to meet this demand. One such work was Sam Beeton's "Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine" – a magazine that, according to Diamond,
"targeted middle-class women and was an immediate commercial success, with its clever mix of French fashion plates, dressmaking paper patterns, designs for fancy-work, excellent recipes (by Mrs Beeton), and serialized novels."
This tome contains 23 full-page engravings illustrating dresses and high fashion.

1871 EXQUISITE Lacroix Illustrated Middle Ages Costumes Knights Jesters Bizarre
Paul Lacroix was a 19th-century French author whose books covered a broad set of topics, including some controversial. Lacroix wrote about ballets, costumes, romance, masquerades, heraldry, religion in the military, and the history of prostitution. He also wrote a book, "Sciences and Letters of the Middle Ages," which covers the studies of alchemy and the occult sciences, as well as an important chapter on heraldry. Engravings depict monsters, bizarre animals, dragons, deformed humans, torture scenes, scalping, maps, flags, and more!
This tome, 'Moeurs, Usages et Costumes', features 15 chromolithograph engravings depicting costumes and clothing from the Middle Ages including ornate knight armor for both men and horses, female dresses, court jesters, as well as in-text images of bizarre occurrences like catching giant fish and chess games.

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
Relatively few garments survive from before the eighteenth century, and the history of costume in the preceding centuries must therefore rely to a great extent on literary and visual evidence. This book, the first of its kind, examines Stuart England through the mirror of dress. It argues that both artistic and literary sources can be read and decoded for important information on dress and the way it was perceived in a period of immense political, social, and cultural change.Focusing on the rich visual culture of the seventeenth century, including portraits, engravings, fashion plates, and sculpture, and on literary sources poetry, drama, essays, sermons the distinguished historian of dress Aileen Ribeiro creates a fascinating… Read More

Description:
A very good selection of handcoloured costume plates from a rare volume
The plates were published in booklets of 6 every 20 days: 2Fr 50 centimes for subscribers to the Bibliotheque universelle des Voyages, and 3Fr for non-subscribers. It's rare to find complete sets in any condition.
With 47 plates (of 90 published), one duplicated (Pl. 81)
All very finely hand-coloured with vibrant hues
Mostly by Leopold Massard, a few by Ferdinand Wachsmuth and J. David
Many of the titles on the plates do not match the subject. Thus an Indian Raja is labeled Emperor of Japan, a Burmese noblewoman described as Japanese, California mislabeled as Mexico, Rio de Janeiro as Cincinatti, Alaska mistaken for Greenland, the Marshall Islands for Byron Isle, Polynesia for South America, etc. This seems to be common with other issues of these plates.
"Drawn by Wachsmut[h] and Massard after the original sketches made by the explorers themselves. Engraved on steel and handcoloured with great care."
The plates are adapted from… Read More
