Lee in Richmond, Virginia and Francis Scott Key in Baltimore, Maryland. Photo measures approximately 3 1/2" x 5", mounted on the first of eight 11" x 14" pages of illustrated biographical and critical text, in French, by Armand Silvestre. Additionally laid-in is a large 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" photo of the Mercie sculpture "Tombeau de Michelet," mounted on 11" x 14" card. From the 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of distinguished figures from the arts and sciences, published in Paris by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. Photo measures approximately 3 1/2" x 5", mounted on the first of twelve 11" x 14" pages of illustrated biographical and critical text, by Aubry-Vezan. Additionally laid in is a large 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" photo, on 11" x 14" card, of the Barrias sculpture "Le Cerment De Spartacus." All text in French. From the 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of distinguished figures from the arts and sciences, published in Paris by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. With color illustrations by Georges Delaw. Includes original velum paper wraps. Bound in full period calf with cat’s-paw pattern calf boards. Spine and inner dentelles are gilt. Miniscule rubbing is present to the extremities. Interior pages are fresh and clean. An English gift inscription dated "Christmas 1925" is written on a front free fly-leaf; the same fly-leaf contains a strip of minor rubbing/chaffing where an old Christmas card (now loosely inserted) was mounted. Anatole France (1844-1924) was a French journalist and novelist. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize in literature. His play "La comédie de celui qui épousa une femme muette" was first published in 1908.

With 12 plates including 2 portraits of Rabelais and 10 scenes after the drawings of Devéria. Included also is the fold-out "carte du Chinonois" which, according to Brunet is not found in all copies. Volume IX ("les songes drolatiques") contains an additional title page, a facsimile of the 1565 title, and 120 full page woodcut grotesques, reproduced by Thompson after those in the original edition [Brunet]. When you close your eyes and imagine Paris at the 20th turn-of-the-century, La Belle Époque, you wouldn't be wrong to conjure a picture of Natalie Clifford Barney. The American expatriate poet and playwright nicknamed 'The Amazon' was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1876. She and her family had a brief life-altering encounter in a New York City hotel with Oscar Wilde, moved to Washington DC and soon after left for a boarding school in France with her sister.
She came out as a lesbian at the age of 12 to her family, declaring that she was sent by Sappho and never looked back. She began writing explicitly about lesbianism in 1900 at the age of 24.
Pensées d'une amazone explores sexual adversity, war, and feminism and boldly includes chapters on incest, sadism, and coupling (Barney was an advocate for polyamory). Upon receiving his dedicated copy of this book, Proust wrote to Barney that it was "ravishing and profound".

Very rare edition. Interesting descriptions of the medicinal properties of over 75 tropical plants. However, to us the greatest strength of this book is the magnificent color plates. They are fresh and vibrant despite the book's age. The book is not dated. We have found a similar title, labeled volume II, dated 1986. This copy is complete, neither volume one or two. We believe it probably pre-dates the 1986 edition.

The book is in excellent condition. The covers have a leather-like cover over padded boards. The covers how soiling and some small chips. The pages and plates are clear, crisp, without marks, tears or folds. The text is entirely in French.

This appears to be a first edition that was rebound many years ago. The only publication date shown is 1808). The pages, binding and print are consistent with a 200 year old book. The front cover has separated from the binding. However, the cord binding is still tight. There is foxing on many of the pages; however, all the pages seem to be easy to read. There is a pull-down chart at the beginning of the book which is still whole with only light foxing. (see photos). The book is entirely in French.

This book takes the reader through the interesting life of the French military in Indochina from 1945-1954. The book is written in French. The pages appear gloss enhancing the detail of the photographs, and the paper used is of high quality weight. he authors of this book, Patrice Pivetta and Eric ADAM, have done an excellent job of providing readers with an engaging and informative account of the French military in Indochina. One-of-a-kind book packed with hundreds of b/w and color photos, illustrations, uniforms and gear.

Contemporary full calf, except for the damaged illustrated frontis, contents are complete and are in fine condition. The text is very legible, internally in remarkable condition for a book that is 300 years old!
By repute, this volume has a distinguished provenance. It was gifted by the Harley family (founders of the 'medical' Harley Street, London) to William Dalrymple (17 August 1772 – 5 December 1847) who was an English surgeon. He learned his trade in London and practised in Norwich, initially from his father's house and later in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He received attention for successfully performing the then rare operation of tying the carotid artery.
