Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with their shield coats of arms.. Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. This divides the men in armour into 4 parts and the last plate in each section has a monogram CW for Christoph Weiditz. 1908. A. W. von Schlegels. Translated by Friedrich Gundolf. Text throughout is clean and unmarked, pages very lightly tanned. Light brown boards are sturdy - showing edgewear and moderate scuffs and stains of age. Spines in poor condition - all but Vols I and IV have been taped either to protect them or to hold them on Vol. I spine is detached and hinges weak. Previous owner's label on front pastedown all volumes. Each volume 10-1/4" x 6-1/2" x 1-3//4"

The book pictured is the copy being sold. The shocking absence of the binding boards may give the buyer opportunities that a buyer of this book with the original binding would not have. The book itself is in very good condition; the text is tight, gold gilt edges on the top, side, and bottom glitter. There is damage to the front flyleaf, but by the half-title page that fraying damage ends and is minor. There is light tanning of the paper at the edges. All the engraving have intact onion skin protection.Given the absence of any binding, this copy may be have more value by extracting its 36 engraving and the other prints. I hope that someone might be willing to rebind this book; giving you the opportunity to blend your style preference and the original 19th ornate style.This of course is a beautifully printed book, 257 pages.As this book weighs nearly 5.5 lbs., this book might require additional postage for expedited, international, or combined orders.

To be over a hundred years old, this book is in remarkably good condition. There is some wear to the cover and the corners are worn and bent.
