as President of the United States, Washington, October 20, 1875; directing the Secretary of State [Hamilton Fish] to issue a warrant "Authorizing Francis M. Richey to receive into custody James T. Burnett, a fugitive from the justice of the United States." 9 3/4" x 7 3/4". 1 page (engraved, with secretarial additions). Uncommon in this form. James T. Burnett was charged with the crime of murder in the first degree. He was charged in Iowa and was then a fugitive in the dominion of Canada. Grant (1822-85), Ohio-born Civil War general; 18th U.S. President (1869-77) noted for the campaign victories at Vicksburg (July, 1863) and at Richmond (March 1865); conferred general of the armies (1865-67) and secretary of war after Stanton until the Senate restored Stanton; administration noted for corrupt officials and the Credit Mobilier scandal; spent final year sin poverty only to be restored by the success of his "Personal Memoirs."

First edition (so stated), first issue with back panel portrait of Salinger credited to Lotte Jacobi and "$3.00" on the front flap. Octavo. Original black cloth stamped in gilt. Dust jacket designed by Michael Mitchell (unclipped; tiny chips to head and tail of spine and to corners; few small chips; front flap detached at fold). Very good. 277 pages. Enclosed in a red and black leather drop box. No signatures or bookplates.

Bold Signature, in black ink on a stiff gray card [1933]. 3 1/2" x 6 1/4". Together with a mailing envelope bearing 2 cancelled stamps, postmarked New York, April 21, 1933, and with Gershwin's holograph return address on verso.

First English edition, first issue. Thin octavo. One page of publisher's advertisements at beginning and 2 pages at end. Front wrapper printed in red and blue (with publication date altered from 1885 to 1886, as issued). Original beige wrappers bound in. 3/4 gilt stamped red morocco over red cloth, spine with raised bands and gilt stamped floral device within a gilt ruled compartment, covers ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Fine. No signatures or bookplates.

First English edition. Octavo. Full gilt stamped red calf, t.e.g. Very good. 312 pages. Rare. Boldly signed by Zane Grey in his signature purple ink on the front free endpaper and signed again in purple ink on the title page. With Zane Grey's small rainbird bookplate on the front free endpaper. Tipped-in is an Autograph Letter Signed from Sir Ernest Hodder Williams sending Christmas and New Years greetings and best wishes. Deluxe issue bound for Hodder and Stoughton by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for presentation to Zane Grey. There was only one copy each of these special leather bound copies done for Zane Grey by Hodder and Stoughton. Provenance: Estate of Betty Zane (Elizabeth) Grey Grosso. Grey's daughter.

(""William Faulkner") in black fountain pen ink on plain unheaded paper watermarked "Caravan Bond, Sphinx Paper"; New York, December 4, 1952. 4to. 1 page (recto only; file holes in upper margin not affecting the document). Very good, fresh, clean and dark example. This document assigns to Random House directly all future income due Faulkner from a three-way agreement among Faulkner, Random House and the William Morris Agency. The document relates to Faulkner's short story, "The Old Man," part of his book "Wild Palms" [1939]. The story discusses a convict's release to work on a flood control in Mississippi. It was written as a screenplay to be used on television. Unfortunately the project never went through. Faulkner at this time was writing television scripts attempting to raise some money for travel and to have free time to continue writing on his novel "The Town." Faulkner (1897-1962), American novelist; winner of both the Nobel Prize for Literature (1949), and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1955).

Third edition (so stated). Octavo. Half white over purple linen, gilt stamped spine, upper cover with gilt stamped floral design by Charles Ricketts, uncut. Very good. 31 pages. Enclosed in a 1/2 brown morocco slipcase with folding chemise. One of 99 copies, printed March 4, 1898, signed by Wilde in black ink on limitation page, with characteristic paraph to the final "e." Mason #374. Bookplate of Chauncey Lawrence Williams on the front free endpaper and a signed pencil notation by Paul Lemperly noting he received the book from Williams. Williams (1872-1924), former member of Way and Williams, publishers and the F.W. Dodge Corp. With his memorial booklet laid in loose. Lemperly (1858-1939), noted American book collector.

Dust jacket (unclipped; rear portrait in blue variant tint, first state; short tear to front panel; front free endpaper with four tape stains). Very good. No signatures or bookplates. Hanneman A24a.

No other signatures of bookplates. Signed and inscribed by A.C. Swinburne on the half title page: "Herbert Walter Mason from his affectionate friend Algernon Charles Swinburne August 4th 1886." *Herbert Walter Mason "Bertie", was the son of Watts-Dunton's sister, Miranda. First American edition, with an alternative ending to the first British edition. Provenance: Al Roubicek with his bookplate of the front pastedown.

First edition. 11" x 7 3/4". Illustrated with color frontispiece and 16 b/w full page drawings by Edward Borein and several vignettes. Two page introduction by Owen Wister. Original red stamped pictorial boards. No dust jacket. Very good. 76 pages.


With a large signed original detailed ink drawing by Borein of two cowboys on horseback, inscribed to Frank E. Bliss and dated 1927. Most original drawings by Borein in books tend to be much less detailed and smaller.

Borein (1872-1945) was a noted Western illustrator and painter. His cowboy drawings appeared in "Land of Sunshine" with encouragement by Charles F. Lummis.

First edition. 8 1/2" x 6 1/2". Original brown wrappers stamped in red (lower right corner of upper cover replaced), uncut and mostly unopened. Very good. 98 pages. No signatures or bookplates. Enclosed in a plum half morocco slipcase.

Mimeographed manuscript of the Joseph L. Mankiewicz screenplay. Illustrated with six hundred and forty two pages of drawings and designs by William Cameron Menzies together with an additional eight page prologue and four page epilogue. Original brown paper wrappers (the cover title page and half title page are detached). This massive and heavy 646 page screenplay (13 3/4" x 8 1/4", 3 inches thick) turned out to be impossible for the cast to handle and a more traditional 200 page version was designed for use on the film, the illustrations were removed and the text reset. While Norman Z. McLeod is credited as director, Menzies stepped in to direct when McLeod became ill during the filming (Curtis, page 142). Very good.


A Lewis Carroll rarity.

Provenance: estate of actor Baby LeRoy who appeared in the film as "Joker" at the age of two.
