William Hogarth was one of the most famous English artists of the 18th-century and his satirical cartoons appeared in comic-strips and other printed works for decades. His most famous works were short series of sketches that told moral stories through the lens of political satire – 'A Harlot's Progress,' 'A Rake's Progress,' and 'Marriage-A-La-Mode.'

This 1833 printing of the works of Hogarth include his most famous works including illustrations to 'Hudibras,' and 'Industry and Idleness.'

1879 UNCLE TOM Autobiography Rev. Josiah Henson Harriet Beecher Stowe Slavery

"Truth is Stranger than Fiction" is the autobiography of Rev. Josiah Henson, an escaped slave and minister who inspired the character of Uncle Tom in Harriet Beecher Stowe's iconic novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Henson recounts his experiences of slavery, his escape to Canada, and his efforts to help other fugitive slaves. The book includes a preface by Stowe herself, along with notes from notable abolitionists Wendell Phillips and John G. Whittier, and an appendix by Bishop Gilbert Haven on the Exodus movement. This work not only sheds light on Henson's life and the injustices of slavery but also on his contributions to the abolitionist movement and the betterment of African-Americans post-Emancipation. Covering the period from 1789 to 1879, this rare edition is enhanced by 16 full-page engravings.

Hardcover bound in 3/4 black morocco with red marbled paper-covered boards. Raised bands on the spine. Top edge gilt. The binding shows light to moderate rubbing and wear with some scuffing on some of the bands and a bit of rubbing on the hinges in spots. Corners a little bumped. Marbled endpapers. The text is a little toned but is clean. The plates are toned but are quite sound. Stated Second Edition on the title page. No copyright date, but the consensus seems to be that the second edition was published in 1842.

Five raised spine bands. Light to moderate wear to the binding. The hinges are quite sound. There is a scuff mark or scrape on the marbled paper on the rear board. The text is generally clean. There is a faint afterimage of the title of another book on the back of the engraved title page. "Vita di Battista Franco Pittore Veneziano (i)" This volume is illustrated with 22 numbered copperplate engravings on 11 pages, plus an engraved title page and a smaller illustration on the printed title page.
