Description:
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1899. Luise (often anglicized from the German as "Louisa") Muhlbach was the penname of Klara Muller Mundt (1814-1873), who achieved worldwide recognition in the 19th Century with her historical novels. Klara's husband, Theodor Mundt (1808-1861), was an equally famous novelist and critic in the couple's homeland, Germany. This following is a complete 20-volume set from Appleton, Muhlbach's original publisher, and was published between 1899 and 1900. The set is in overall Very Good condition, bound in a black cloth with die-stamped gilt spine lettering and a gilt imperial eagle. The eagle is also blind stamped on the front panel. All volumes have top-edge gilt. Click on photo. The books show light shelf rubbing (except for one volume, with moderate crown rubbing) and the Appleton name on the spine bottom is rubbed or faded. I would rate two of the volumes as Good, due to moderate cover staining and more wear than the others, many of which were… Read More

[Sant'Orso]: Leonardus Achates de Basilea, 1474. Second edition of this version; the seventh edition in total.Petrarch's poetry in Italian, the Canzoniere and the Trionfi count among the most celebrated and influential works in western literature. In the present incunable edition it is combined with the brief biography by Leonardo Bruni that helped to spread the poet's fame and reputation. Petrarch's 'Book of Songs', based on the 'libro d'autore'
Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca, 1304-1374) is considered one of the greatest love poets of world literature. Referred to by Petrarch himself as Rerum vulgarium fragmenta, and in his opening words called "rime sparse" (scattered rhymes), the collection of 366 poems - mostly sonnets - was called Il Canzoniere
(Book of Songs) since the Renaissance. Immortalising the poet's love for the unattainable Laura, this cycle established the sonnet form and became the basis for the development of lyric poetry throughout Renaissance Europe.

Description:
Smith, Lillian: Strange Fruit. Reynal & Hitchcock, 1944 1st. Ed, Stated 6th Printing Thus. About this book: Strange Fruit is a 1944 bestselling novel debut by American author Lillian Smith that dealt with the then-forbidden and controversial theme of interracial romance. The title was originally "Jordan is so Chilly", with Smith later changing the title to Strange Fruit. In her autobiography, singer Billie Holliday wrote that Smith chose to name the book after her song "Strange Fruit" , which was about the lynching and racism against African Americans although Smith maintained that the book's title referred to the "damaged, twisted people (both black and white) who are the products or results of our racist culture." After the book's release, the book was banned in Boston and Detroit for "lewdness" and crude language. Strange Fruit was also banned from being mailed through the U.S. Postal Service, With the ban against the book being lifted by President Roosevelt after his wife Eleanor Roosevelt… Read More
