Combining the page-turning momentum of a psychological thriller with the finely observed, nuanced portrayal of a domestic drama, a nervous, hypervigilant, parent begins to spiral out of control when her young son's words and actions start to mirror the barely repressed, violent rage of the long-lost brother who destroyed her childhood. Description:
Edwin John Dove Pratt (1883-1964) was one of Canada's most notable and unique poets of the twentieth century. Born in Newfoundland, he studied philosophy, psychology, and theology at the University of Toronto, and was ultimately appointed to the English Department of Victoria College at the University of Toronto, the library of which bears his name. Much of his poetry reflected his Newfoundland origins, if not explicitly, then in his frequent treatments of maritime and nautical themes. Other topics addressed in his poetry included science and technology and socio-economic concerns.
The Iron Door is perhaps something of a departure from his other works, and more philosophically inclined. Inspired by a dream prompted by the death of his mother, the poem is concerned with an iron door set in a cliff face that separates this world from the one waiting after death, and how various people come to be before it, and their various reactions to it. One thousand copies of the work were printed, and it was… Read More

Description:
1948 WILLIAM FAULKNER 1st/1st Intruder in the Dust Racial Justice Civil Rights

"Intruder in the Dust" by William Faulkner, published in 1948, is a crime novel set in Mississippi that explores racial tensions and the quest for justice. The story centers on Lucas Beauchamp, a black farmer wrongfully accused of murdering a white man, whose path to exoneration is aided by a diverse group of characters, including black and white teenagers, and a spinster from a longstanding Southern family. Faulkner's signature stream of consciousness narrative and deep reflections on the South's historical memory of the American Civil War add depth to the novel. The characters and themes highlight the complexities of racism and the possibility of redemption in the American South. Following its publication, the novel was adapted into a film, and Faulkner's contribution to American literature was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 1950. The novel continues to be appreciated for its critical engagement with social issues and… Read More
