Oblong Quarto. 18 volumes of 19 lacking volume #11 but includes the volume 19 which is title circus trains., each volume illustrated in either color or black & white, plastic comb bound, all combs in working order with the exception of volume one which has only one comb broken. A very nice collection, condition from near fine to very good. These books cover every major railroad, eastern, mid western, far western, southern, etc.

This is a scarce, early copy of "Taintor's Route and City Guides" - this particular guide is for "New York to Saratoga, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls, via Hudson River and New York Central Railroads." Published in 1867 by Taintor Brothers in New York. The guide features 20 color maps in all. "With descriptive sketches of the cities, villages, stations, and scenes and objects of interest along the route." There are illustrated advertisements at both the front and back. Photocopies of 8 pages substituted where the pages left blank; a charming letter signed by the author explaining how to attach the replacements laid in. "The cab-forward, exclusive trademark of the Southern Pacific for nearly half a century, was the outgrowth of the company's superb engineering department. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents.Condition:The pages are in great condition - mostly clean and white with no writing and only some very sparse light foxing; tiny tear at the outer edge of page 29. The fold-out map is clean and firmly attached. The covers are present, but have detached from the spine and are separated along the right edge of the spine; creases at the left-hand corners of the front cover; there are a few tiny stain spots on the back cover.

Zerah Colburn was a 19th-century American engineer who is best known for his designs to the steam locomotive and railway systems. He was regularly employed to collaborate with other engineers to explore improvements to American and European trains. One such work was 'The Permanent Way' in which Colburn and Alexander Holley discussed coal-burning locomotives and how they impacted train economy and the railway industry.
This 1858 first edition contains numerous full-page illustrations depicting parts of the locomotive and rails along with charts and diagrams for the authors' research.
