Small losses to spine tips, chip to corner of back panel (1 cm triangle), short tear with associated creases to front panel. Book has very slight insect scarring to the compressed page edges and a few pages with creased corners (appear deliberate), small green dot on the back paste down and a slight bump to the top of the spine. Folio. 77 pp. written in ink in a fine cursive hand, each section underlined in red, in a ledger notebook of 141 numbered pages, with detailed specifications for all aspects of shipbuilding, from construction and trigging to engines and cabins, etc. In a homemade binding of thick canvas surrounding the original ledger, the canvas stretched across the boards with interlocking twine stitching. Front cover with the title in MS on the canvas, front pastedown and final blank bearing calligraphic inscriptions of the name of the first owner: "Captain M.J. Paris: Chez De Hansy le jeune, 1774 A very good copy in newer full morocco binding with fold out map by Robert de Vaugondy. M. de Freville was a teacher, who wrote a variety of works, including for children. This book is notable in that it gives one of the first accounts in French of Cook's 1st voyage in the Endeavour, 1768-71. The bindings have raised bands and gilt titles and dates to spines. They are in near fine condition. The endpapers are marbled in a near match for the original marbling on the page edges. New blanks have been inserted at front and rear. This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.

Hardcover bound in original blue cloth with a front cover design of a three masted ship embossed in gilt. The binding is worn and shows heavy white spotting to the cloth. The inner hinges are secure, but the frontis piece is detached and chipped about the edges. Text is toned. INSCRIBED on the front flyleaf, "Mrs. Elizabeth A. Weeks / Presented by / Mr. James Sprunt / Wilmington, N.C. / Jan. 1922." There are some notations on the front pastedown. Quite scarce.

Paris: Tolmer, 1924. First Edition. An outstanding French children's book of the 1920s and an unusually bold and daring example of pochoir design. Edy Legrand (1892-1970) was a leading illustrator of the Art Deco era, renowned for challenging traditional notions of children's book design. This folio, celebrating the great French explorers of the Pacific and Americas, was printed using the pochoir method of multiple colour stencilling guards. The resulting images are remarkable for their strong lines and vivid colouration. A prolific artist, Legrand illustrated a wide range of material including Don Quixote, The Three Musketeers and Dante's Inferno. Nonetheless, his children's books - remarkable for their blend of naïveté and confident design - are considered his most enduring productions. Legrand later worked in the United States, and eventually settled in Morocco where he produced oil paintings now considered modern masterpieces. This rare, privately-printed copy is one of only 100 that were printed by the prestigious early twentieth-century Grabhorn Press of San Francisco. Wrapper has bumps and creases to edges and corners. Some fading and soiling to binding. Moderate-sized tear along one edge of upper spine. Tissue guard for frontispiece is loose from binding. Pages have browned with aging. No internal markings. Pages are "unopened". Black and white and color illustrations and a fold-out map.
