Description:
Paris: De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1821. Leather Bound. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 258 pages. Hardcover bound in mid-20th century full red leather with gilt titles on the spine. Light wear to the binding. The binding is fresh and clean and has the appearance of a library type binding but it is not an ex-library copy. Endpapers contemporary with the binding, yet there are also some blank endpapers original to the book. One of these has some erased pencil notations. The text block is sound, and the text is exceptionally clean. We see one leaf (pages 71-72) which have some paper repairs. The paper in one gathering in the center is a bit toned. Wide margins. Text is in French. Originally published in 1787, both that and this edition are quite rare. Not illustrated; no maps called for. A very rare pilot guide for Saint Dominique (later Haiti). The descriptions were the basis of maps.

This is a very detailed and unique book with hundreds of B&W, and some color photos of naval vessels used during the time period of 1914 - 1945. It showcases a full array of patterns with narrative about each ship/pattern. Camoflage schemes used by the US Navy & British Allies and those of enemy Navies - German, Italian, and Japanese are featured in this all encompassing book.
This book is known as the most comprehensive study of the subject to date and a copy of it is in the Library of Congress.
Naval camouflage at sea was not intended to 'hide' ships, and an in-depth commentary explains the theory and development of visual deception, and the different ways in which it was intended to work at sea.
The core of the book is a listing of all the major patterns and schemes, with their colors, characteristics and function. Wherever… Read More

Description:
Navy cloth binding. Gilt ship, Jane signature and New South Wales Library stamp on the front board. Gilt title on the spine.
A very rare Edition The Imperial Russian Navy operated as the navy of the Russian Tsardom and later the Russian Empire from 1696 to 1917. Formally established in 1696, it lasted until dissolved in the wake of the February Revolution of 1917. It developed from a smaller force that had existed prior to Tsar Peter the Great's founding of the modern Russian navy during the Second Azov campaign in 1696. It expanded in the second half of the 18th century and reached its peak strength by the early part of the 19th century, behind only the British and French fleets in terms of size. The Imperial Navy drew its officers from the aristocracy of the Empire, who belonged to the state Russian Orthodox Church. Young aristocrats began to be trained for leadership at a national naval school. From 1818 on, only officers of the Imperial Russian Navy were appointed to the position of Chief Manager… Read More

Description:
Navy cloth binding. Gilt ship on the front board. Gilt title and naval rating on the spine.
H.M.S. Britannia was the name given to the British Royal Navy's ship used for the preliminary education of naval officers from 1859 to 1905. It was anchored first at Portsmouth, then Portland, and finally off the town of Dartmouth in Devon. The first ship used was the 1820 three-decker Britannia, which was replaced in 1869 by the three-decker Prince of Wales, which became the fifth ship to bear the name Britannia. From 1864 onwards the two-decker Hindostan was moored ahead of Britannia and connected by an enclosed gangway, providing extra accommodation and classroom space. Cadets joining the Royal Navy were entered into a "term" in Britannia, in which they remained for two years of instruction. The number of terms started each year varied, ranging from two to four before normalising at three per annum. If cadets gained enough time through scholarly aptitude and good behaviour, upon leaving for the fleet they… Read More

From his upbringing amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. A rare copy of a sought-after edition The Voyages And Travels Of Captains Parry Franklin Ross And Mr Belzoni Selected By Captain J F Dennett With Plates Including Portraits
Sir William Edward Parry FRS (19 December 1790 – 8 July 1855) was an Anglo-Welsh explorer of the Arctic best known for his 1819–1820 expedition through the Parry Channel, probably the most successful in the long quest for the Northwest Passage, until it was finally negotiated by Roald Amundsen in 1906. In 1827, Parry attempted one of the earliest expeditions to the North Pole. He reached 82° 45' N, setting a record for human exploration Farthest North that stood for nearly five decades before being surpassed at 83° 20' N by Albert Hastings Markham in 1875.
