Moderate rubbing to extremities, chipping to spine ends, joints starting at head, corners bumped and somewhat worn, recent owner bookplate (King Lawrence Parker) to front pastedown. Each volume is dated 1838 and is stated "Seconde Edition." Hardcovers bound in three-quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards. All volumes rebacked with modern lighter brown leather (the original leather has chipping on the boards near the spines, but with the rebacks the bindings are sturdy and can withstand confident use). Each spine has a red leather title label and a small green leather Volume number label. There is moderate wear to the bindings, which is abraded in places. Rubbing and scuffing to the boards. Spines are sound and hinges are secure. The outer edge of the text block is speckled. Light soiling and edgewear to wrappers, a few chips to spine, presentation inscription "Joseph Patterson Esq with the very sincere regards of The Author" to head of front wrapper. Light toning to interior, light soiling to a few leaves, pp. 41-42 misbound after pp. 43-44. $150. * Only edition. A discussion of the controversy surrounding the invention of the steamboat. Nicholas J. Roosevelt had partnered with Robert Fulton and Robert R. Livingston to design, build and introduce the first steamboats to American waterways. In 1815, he claimed that he had already obtained a patent as the inventor of vertical wheels and prepared a lawsuit to seek protection; he later abandoned the suit due to the expense.

Paris: De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1821. Leather Bound. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 258 pages. Hardcover bound in mid-20th century full red leather with gilt titles on the spine. Light wear to the binding. The binding is fresh and clean and has the appearance of a library type binding but it is not an ex-library copy. Endpapers contemporary with the binding, yet there are also some blank endpapers original to the book. One of these has some erased pencil notations. The text block is sound, and the text is exceptionally clean. We see one leaf (pages 71-72) which have some paper repairs. The paper in one gathering in the center is a bit toned. Wide margins. Text is in French. Originally published in 1787, both that and this edition are quite rare. Not illustrated; no maps called for. A very rare pilot guide for Saint Dominique (later Haiti). The descriptions were the basis of maps.

Condition: New. Extremely well preseved book that was kept in storage. No signs of wear on the book. Small wrinkle noted along the top of the back dust cover. Please see photos.

This book is known as the most comprehensive study of the subject to date and a copy of it is in the Library of Congress.

A very rare Edition The Imperial Russian Navy operated as the navy of the Russian Tsardom and later the Russian Empire from 1696 to 1917. Formally established in 1696, it lasted until dissolved in the wake of the February Revolution of 1917. It developed from a smaller force that had existed prior to Tsar Peter the Great's founding of the modern Russian navy during the Second Azov campaign in 1696. It expanded in the second half of the 18th century and reached its peak strength by the early part of the 19th century, behind only the British and French fleets in terms of size. H.M.S. Britannia was the name given to the British Royal Navy's ship used for the preliminary education of naval officers from 1859 to 1905. It was anchored first at Portsmouth, then Portland, and finally off the town of Dartmouth in Devon. The first ship used was the 1820 three-decker Britannia, which was replaced in 1869 by the three-decker Prince of Wales, which became the fifth ship to bear the name Britannia. From 1864 onwards the two-decker Hindostan was moored ahead of Britannia and connected by an enclosed gangway, providing extra accommodation and classroom space. Cadets joining the Royal Navy were entered into a "term" in Britannia, in which they remained for two years of instruction. Sir William Edward Parry FRS (19 December 1790 – 8 July 1855) was an Anglo-Welsh explorer of the Arctic best known for his 1819–1820 expedition through the Parry Channel, probably the most successful in the long quest for the Northwest Passage, until it was finally negotiated by Roald Amundsen in 1906. In 1827, Parry attempted one of the earliest expeditions to the North Pole. He reached 82° 45' N, setting a record for human exploration Farthest North that stood for nearly five decades before being surpassed at 83° 20' N by Albert Hastings Markham in 1875.
