London: Smith Elder, 1884. xii and 288 pages. Frontispiece. Publisher's red cloth with palm tree in gold, spine faded. Misleadingly titled since 'Dishonest John' Colborne was invalided back to Cairo before the Kordofan expedition got under way. Still he was the only survivor of Hicks' staff. In later years he hung around Cairo scratching a living from journalism and was described by Wingate as 'looking like a second-rate Jupiter in reduced circumstances'. Paris: Magimel, l'an troisieme de la Republique (1795). Fifth edition. xv and 520 pages. 14 folding engraved plates, 5 folding tables. Handsome copy in contemporary tree calf with gilt dentelles. Jean Baptiste de Gribeauval revolutionised the French artillery by lightening the guns and encouraging the employment of skilled drivers. The new mobile artillery, especially the 12 pounders, were to become the backbone of Napoleon's grand batteries. London: Simpkin Marshall, 1853. xxvi and 28 pages. Frontispiece coloured lithograph of uniform, engraving of a table centrepiece presented to Lord Grantham. A very good copy in the publisher's blue straight grained cloth with badge and decorations in silver. Beautifully produced little book. The Yorkshire Hussars weren't short of a bob or two. When Earl de Grey and other officers decided that they needed a suitasble mess for their annual training fortnight, they had the de Grey Rooms constructed in York, a building whose front elevation has seven bays. London: T Egerton, 1811 third edition. viii and 371 pages. Folding general map, 6 folding plans. A very good copy in contemporary half calf. The third and best edition is enlarged by 45 pages from the second edition to take in Marmont's retreat from Badajoz in 1811. The extra plate is a plan of Albuera. Very good, in suede leather bindig over the original paper wraps, which are edgeworn, and have a stain to top edge of the half title page. Internally fine. This is a facsimile of " one of the only two copies known to exist, " The london edition of 1644. The preface ( 6 pages ), is written by the owner of that copy. Scarce. See photos..

Green cloth hardcover with leather label on spine; gilt title; floral endpapers; 670+ pages; b&w photo plates; b&w foldout map of the battle of Colenso. Very good minus condition : spine tips slightly worn; top corners lightly bumped; small chip to leather title panel; name inside in a couple of places; straight; hinges strong. New plastic protective jacket. .

London: Charles J. Skeet, 1859. First edition. A rare personal account of the Crimean War, written soon after the events described. Orange red buckram, with gilt titles to the spine. Darkened to the spine and with some marks to the boards. Binding is a little shaken, with a slight lean. Pages are a little darkened, with some foxing spots. Errata. Adverts for recent publications to rear. [vi], 351 [i], [4]. pp The author (anonymous here but Charles Townshend Wilson) was with the Coldstream Guards. He purchased his commission in 1839, was an Ensign by 1842, a captain in 1846 and Lt Colonel in 1854. He served at Alma, Balaclava and Inkemann, as well as at the Siege of Sebastapol. He received the Crimea Medal with 4 bars, and retired by sale in 1855. Died in 1887. 200 by 130mm (7¾ by 5 inches).

J Worthington, Profusely Illustrated. Richmond, VA: Dustin, Gilman & Co. 1876 First Edition. This is the story of a woman "out of her time" in her views, who thrived on the adventures she experienced. There was some dispute about the accuracy of her tales, but the men she fooled were not happy about what she did, so the disdain might be expected. There is some exaggeration, and there is much bravado, to be sure. Her exposure of many of the corruptions within the Federal government, the attitudes between the North and South all make this a very readable narrative. Condition: NOT a library book. Heavily illustrated throughout along with history of the Stealth Bomber. Binding solid. SIGNED/INSCRIBED BY HAL MARKARIAN to inside cover. Markarian was an Armenian American aircraft designer who would be known for implementing the initial designs of the B-2 Stealth Bomber in 1979. During the initial project of the Stealth Bomber, Hal Markarian was appointed as project manager. VERY SCARCE signed copy by this notable person of history. Markarian passed away in 2012. .

Inscribed and signed by the author on the front flyleaf: "To 'Old Jake;' mentor, friend, master: see if these years of study under thee hath taught me a blessed thing herein-- Clay Fisher 6-3-61." The author is perhaps better known by his real name, Will Henry. Textblock is clean; covers show moderate shelf and handling wear with bumped corners, fading, and soiling.
