1995. Stuart, Gordon. Water color portrait of the poet, executed in Swansea, Wales, in 1995, signed and dated in the upper right corner. 18-1/2 inches x 14-3/4 inches. Matted and framed. This is one of a series of portraits commissioned from Stuart as the official artist of the U.K. Year of Literature, hosted in Swansea. Ginsberg's visit culminated in a National Poetry Day reading at the Royal Albert Hall marking the thirtieth anniversary of his first appearance there. It was his last visit to the U.K. Stuart, born in Toronto frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy, was shown widely in the U.K., and honored with numerous awards. Five of his works, including his 1953 portrait of Dylan Thomas, are in the National Portrait Gallery, others are in the National Portrait Gallery of Canada, the National Library of Wales, and many other public and private collections. Other writers who sat for him included Margaret Atwood, Seamus Heaney and R.S. Thomas.

Binding a bit rubbed and bumped but overall sound and the gilt still bright. This copy has a full page original ink self portrait of Orpen on the front blank endpaper, showing the artist painting the famous American Wall Street lawyer and art collector, Paul Cravath. ---- The drawing is inscribed by Orpen at the bottom of the page "My very dear Mr Cravath-It was a big job to tackle on those hot summer afternoons you must admit. All good wishes in 1922.-------(?) William Orpen". 1969. FINE. Original oil on board, 11 1/2 x 8 in. framed with linen mat. SIGNED and dated CAA lower right, framed dimensions 17 1/2 x 14 label on back "General Store Gallery / Austin, Texas" and sealed. Photos on request. James Boren was one of the deans of modern western painters in Texas. Born in Waxahachie, Boren was inducted into the Cowboy Artists of America and became one of its most celebrated and honored members. His preferred media was watercolor. Few oils have come to market. In the late 1960s he and fellow CAA member Melvin Warren, both established homes and studios in the small central Texas town of Clifton and helped turn that city into something of a western artist's colony. This small gem in oil is rare to see and not offered for sale previously, having been purchased by me from the original owner in San Antonio in the early 1980's. Only a few oils have turned up on the auction sights, most recent items are $3,000 - 8,000.00.
