  • Used
  • very good
This is a very nice condition, rare, original issue of "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" from December 5, 1863. This issue contains the complete text of Abraham Lincoln's GETTYSBURG ADDRESS, as well as a first-hand reporter's account of the "celebration" ("The day was lovely; the sky unclouded, and all around seemed to harmonise in quiet beauty with the solemn occasion...At the close President Lincoln addressed the assembly: 'Fourscore and seven years ago...'"). Also featured in this issue is a wonderful 2-page centerfold with various detailed engravings (7 in all) of the "dedication ceremony," including a terrific panoramic illustration of "The consecration of the Great National Ceremony near Gettysburg, Thursday, Nov. 19, by Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, and his cabinet."

Condition:
The issue is in overall very good condition with only some small tears along the edges and a few at the center crease; there is a very light stain at the top-left corner of page 175 and some random, light foxing spots in a few outer margins. No writing.

[Handbook of Middle American Indians, Volume 13, page 293] First Mexican edition. Clavijero, a Mexican native, was exiled with the other Jesuits in the 1760s, and lived in Italy thereafter. His history of Mexico is considered one of the best of the early histories of the subject. His history of Baja California is the first such, and contains passages relating to the foundation of the mission at San Francisco, as well as material on Kino and Salvatierra. Translated from the Italian manuscripts by Nicoles Garcia de San Vincente. The Palou volume is essential reading for the early history of Northern California. This is the second edition of the Vida of Serra. First published 1787. Francisco Palou (1723-1789) was a Franciscan missionary, administrator, and historian… Read More

First edition with all the requisite first printing points; an absolutely stunning copy of this book which is notoriously hard to find in collectible condition....this being a near fine copy with a tight binding and clean white pages that shows some mild shelf wear to the spine ends and a small PO stamp on the front free end paper (interestingly his name is Per Odd Keul, an extensive world traveler and a cancer survivor); housed in a fine dust jacket that is basically flawless save for some very mild shelfwear on the top spine end....a beautiful copy of this Pulitzer Prize winning novel and THE most important work of civil war fiction....protected in a mylar cover.

The map depicts a camp with symbols of canons, along Fox Creek and Little Fox River. Notation on verso "Plan of Camp May 9, 1779." On left corner: "Hedq [Headquarters] of God____." There are a few possible locations based on the name Little Fox River, but perhaps the most likely seems to be in what was then referred to as the Northwest Territory, in present day Illinois, some 58 miles south of Vincennes, because there are recorded military activities in the area in the timeframe. In December 1778 the British took Ft. Sackville, in Vincennes on the Wabash River along the border of present day Illinois and Indiana. Then in February 1779 American forces under George Rogers Clark retook the fort, re-naming it Ft. Patrick Henry. "In… Read More
