Description:
Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 218 x 140 mm), 318 pages, in red boards, gilt titles to spine, in an illustrated, unclipped dust jacket.
INSCRIBED by Joseph North, the editor, on the front end paper to artist Raphael Soyer and his wife Rebecca: "You were inspirers of this book. With love, Joe North." Inscribed and dated in the year of publication. A nice association: Soyer was a socialist realist artist who taught at the John Reed Club, the New School for Social Research, and the Art Students' League.
The book consists of fiction, reportage, and essays from the pages of New Masses, a left-wing literary magazine that was published from 1926-1948. With work by Ernest Hemingway, Muriel Rukeyser, Theodore Dreiser, James Agee, Kenneth Patchen, John Dos Passos, Dorothy Parker, Richard Wright, Nelson Algren, Federico Garcia Lorca (translated by Langston Hughes), Mike Gold, and Henri Barbuse, among many others. Numerous drawings and cartoons by Bill Gropper, John Groth, Gardner Rea, Mischa Richter, and others.… Read More

Description:
This is complicated so bear with me. This is a sammelband (collection) of four titles from the publisher Muir. Listed in order of binding: First title "Life of Thomas Paine" (1833) is not attributed but appears to be abridged Sherwin's biography of Paine (See OCLC: 933006301). Second title "Rights of Man" (1833) requires no explanation. Next two titles written by Peter MacKenzie are rare and make up most of the value. Third title "Exposure of the Spy System" is the 1832 first edition of this work. Includes frontis of Hardie's grave. The fourth (final) title "Trial of James Wilson" is the 1832 first edition. The whole thing paginates: 48, viii, 104, [2], 242, 48. Bound in high quality quarter leather with marbled boards fine binding by Starr Bookworks. Defects are: page 21/22 of "Rights" has a repaired hole affecting a few words (see scan); list of Paine's works has some check marks; title page of "Spy" has small edge tear not affecting anything. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you… Read More

Description:
1736 BIBLE & BANNED Commentary Jansenism Catholic 8v Pasquier Quesnel French
Pasquier Quesnel was a 17th-century French Jansenist best-remembered for his commentary on the New Testament. This commentary was written to push Jansenist theology and doctrine which, unfortunately, seemed to form numerous phrases that were considered heretical by the Catholic Church. This French edition of the New Testament includes Quesnel's commentary, published in eight tomes.

Description:
"TIME, a book of words and pictures by William Burroughs, and with 4 drawings by Brion Gysin." A limited English printing made on a spirit duplicator, a collector has told me, by poet Jim Pennington of Brighton. The original printings by 'C' Press were less than 1000 copies, some signed. These are rare. But for English Burroughs collectors especially, this 'pirate' edition is what circulated in the UK and was influential on the underground circuit. This copy was obtained by me from Unicorn Bookshop who was publishing a book of mine at the time.15 sheets printed on both sides. The soft duplicated sheets are attached with staples along the top edge. Paper is tanned with age. (see 7 photos)
In Reality Studio, Jed Birmingham writes:
"Time is the fullest expression of Burroughs' experimentation with the newspaper and magazine format that is part parody and part critique as well as an expression of a new format and form capable of expressing a greater truth than fiction or journalism separately."

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition, first printing. Octavo. Original green cloth over boards with gilt titling and dust jacket (not price-clipped) with $6.95 price and 10/57 on front inside flap and publisher's full address to rear inside flap. Superb first printing in a bright dust jacket, minor edgewear to dust jacket at spine and folds, with slight chipping to head of spine, and small abrasions to front and spine of dust jacket, else fine in a very good dust jacket.. Exceptional first edition of Ayn Rand's (1905-1982) magnum opus and libertarian classic. Reportedly born from a conversation between Rand and fellow libertarian novelist, Isabel Paterson, Atlas Shrugged explores the morality of self-interest by depicting the consequences of a general strike by creative professionals who henceforth refuse to share with the world their art, innovations, and ideas. Set in a dystopic future America, Atlas Shrugged combines science fiction, mystery, philosophy, and romance to investigate several… Read More

Description:
New York: Random House, 1959. First Random House edition. Octavo. Original blue cloth decorated in black with gilt lettering and dust jacket (not price-clipped). Creasing to board edges with some rubbing to cloth; minor edgewear and scuffing to dust jacket. Near-fine.. Bright first Random House edition of Ayn Rand's (1905-1982) debut novel about life in post-revolutionary Russia. First published by Random House in 1959 following the commercial success of Rand's 1957 best-seller Atlas Shrugged, We the Living tells the story of Kira Argounova, a fierce and independent spirit who struggles against the collectivism of Soviet Russia during the early 1920s. The novel was first completed in 1934 but, despite H. L. Mencken's support, failed to attract a publisher until 1935 when Macmillan agreed to publish the work. Macmillan's agreement to publish Rand's novel purportedly sparked debate within the publisher's editorial ranks, with certain communist-sympathetic editors objecting to its publication. Description:
New York: The Bookmailer Inc, 1959. 1st edition. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket (as issued). Near VG. 8vo, ~128pp, laminated fabric covers. The rare trade paper edition of this pseudonymous 1959 novel (usually encountered in a smaller format), which has been plausibly attributed to far-right scholar Revilo P. Oliver (who was an important figure in the John Birch Society when this was published). It was definitely the epistolary model on which The Turner Diaries by William Pierce was based, and thus provides an important link between the Eisenhower-era Right and its more militant successors (Oliver split from the Birch Society in 1966 and went on to be closely associated with the National Alliance). This was a publication of far-right publisher Lyle H. Munson. Owner name to front free endpaper (no other markings); else unmarked with some cover soil/toning, spine tilt, reading wear and a few minor interior stains.
