Robert Waller (1939-2017) was a faculty member at the Univ. of Northern Iowa, serving as dean of the business school (1980-1986). In 1989, dissatisfied with his career he took an unpaid leave of absence to explore the state of Iowa. Photographing the covered bridges found in Madison Co. (Iowa) Waller was the inspired to write the novella in 2 weeks. In the story Robert Kincaid, a photographer encounters the middle-aged farm wife Francesca. After an intense four-day affair Francesca must make a choice; remain with her family or begin a new life.

Binding tight and square. Original full-bound cloth boards present, in exceptional condition for their age, with slight wear to corners as shown. Minimal wear present to boards and text block, with some wear evident to the original dust jacket, with a repaired tears on both the front and back covers, as well as some chipping losses at spine corners, and wear to the edges at bottom and top. Clipped (as is typical) at the top corner, with original price of $3 not clipped at the bottom left.
