Monumental bibliographical listing of nearly 6800 works published by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1869 to 1953, organized sequentially by publication number and year, with a complete alphabetical index to all works cited. Very Good, clean and bright, binding tight and square, corners sharp. A small rectangular portion in the blank margin at the upper right corner of the title page, approximately 3/8" high by 2" long, has been clipped out, not affecting text on either side. Text in Bulgarian. A rare reference.

Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Good. This volume was printed on poor quality paper and rarely survives. Splitting to edge of fragile paper spine. Usual browning/foxing. 46 p. Text in Russian. With author's portrait. This is the second published appearance (and first in book form) of Solzhenitsyn's hugely controversial first book, originally published in the magazine Novy Mir two months earlier. By this time, Solzhenitsyn's ability to publish in his homeland was in jeopardy. Though a number of minor pieces would appear in periodicals, this was the first and last major publication of his work during the Soviet regime.

First American edition, an unusually fine copy of a scarce book commonly found in worn and frayed condition, and rarely so bright. There is no priority between this and the first English edition (Vizitelly, London) which carries the same translation and is printed from the same setting. Though uncredited in the book, the translation was made by Frederick Whishaw, a Russian-born British novelist, poet and musician. He translated a number of works by Dostoevsky in the 1880a which were published by Henry Vizetelly in London and Crowell in New York. Original exceedingly rare Russian Language 1st (Pirate) Edition of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Meets all the issue points for the true 1st Edition - "Roman" to title page, 634 pages, publishers imprint in cyrillic, and 2 page introduction (lacking from later Russian editions). Unusually tight, bright, Very Good condition, with no inscriptions and only light toning to closed page edges. Several gatherings are unevenly browned as usual, due to differing paper stocks used in printing. Issued without a dust-jacket.The publication of the Russian text of Doctor Zhivago was attended by odd circumstances. It first appeared in a 'pirated' (or possibly semi-authorised) edition, a short time before Feltrinelli's official edition came out in Milan.
