In 1760, Pons Augustin Alletz published one the best and most popular manuals on country life. 'The Agronomist',
or 'l'Albert Moderne', was a highly desirable book of advice on gardening, animal breeding, veterinary medicine, hunting, and cooking recipes. The most important, and most oft-read section was that on wine and wine making. This section also tells of the health benefits of wine as well as the healing properties and aromatics and vinegar.
The title of this edition suggests the influence of Albert, or Albertus Magnus, a medieval friar who became well-known for his writings of secrets of the world on alchemy, astronomy, physiology, theology, and much, much more. Alletz sought to gain prominence by featuring the name of a well-respected mind in the title of his book.

Vincent Francois Dulague was an 18th-century French scientist known for his studies in hydrography and navigation. His best work was 'Lessons of Navigation' which became a staple in European naval schools. First published in 1768, this book contained instructional guides on piloting ships as well as theories behind various navigational practices. While the contents of this book are important and influential, the folding engravings, longitudinal charts, and trigonometry tables are an impressive inclusion.

Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history 'Spectacle of Nature'. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. There was a time when Pluche himself called it 'La physique des enfants' or 'physics of the children'. The main themes portrayed in this work are not simply of the physical, natural world. Take for instance the first volume – Pluche writes, "We are here only to be virtuous" – a moral vision on how we are to live.
