London: Thomas Payne and Son, and Edward Brooke. Fair. 1785. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Brown leather boards detached, gilt paste-on label on spine. Paper paste-on label on front states: "Enclosure No. 11267 from E. W. Adams (hand-written above printed name now blacked out) , to Mr. D. C. Lannes, Gen. Pat. Attorney, Western Electric Co. , Inc. , 195 Broadway, New York, U. S. A". Laid in at page 409 is a letter addressed to D. C. , from Clarence G. Stoll, 195 Broadway, New York, who was retiring on August 22, with no year given on the letter, the handwriting being of old school. Petrie, who ran unsuccessfully against John Bristow for a seat in the House of Commons from the Borough of Cricklade, discovered that the winner purchased votes, and took Bristow to court. Petrie prevailed, and this book deals with the lawsuit, as well as other issues which came to light. An extremely rare volume in its original state. Description:
Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good+ in Poor Dust Jacket. 1929. Hardcover. From rear DJ panel: "the fragile and beautiful sequel to "skippy", this book is a collection of random letters of a small boy, Skippy, to Sooky, which, in philosophy and pathos, represent the very height of contemporary humour. All 7 tipped-in illustrations by the author are present. Very hard to find with DJ. Edgewear is minimal with the minor exception of head and heel of spine, the second page in the book has been torn out so I don't know what page it was. Title page, copyright page, frontispiece and front free endpaper still present. This torn-out page was between the ffep and illustrated frontispiece and I suspect it was a second ffep which had a signature on it (you can see the mirror image on the first ffep. DJ is chipped and torn, and has the list of other G&D children's books listed on the back. DJ was taped back together on the underside. All the 'enclosed' letters on front… Read More
