Typography

Many people are fascinated by the history of typography, and there is a large selection of rare, antique, and hard-to-find typography books available in the Biblio Rare Book Room. Some of the books featured here focus on the history of typography as a whole, and others focus on the typographies of specific cultures and traditions. The history of typography is vast and diverse, as each society developed their own blend of typography and type design. Long before Gutenberg's printing press, people were developing stamps and clay impressions of commonly used characters to more quickly print and publish books.

Typography goes far beyond the eternal debate of "serif vs. sans serif", and many of our booksellers have rare and special books dedicated to the science and art behind typography. If you love the written word, it would be only appropriate to feature some of these books in your antique book collection.

Black paper-covered boards with silver titling and multicolored thread tie closure. Housed in black lidded box with title in white and hand written edition number on lid. Signed and numbered by the artist. Dirk Hagner: "The album uses a quote from Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska employing texting as a means to allow use of larger type in the letterpress process than would be normally possible. 'All is mine and nothing owned for memory, and mine only while I look.' Much like a jpeg photograph the words compress when texted to fewer letters; however, when read, it 'resurrects' to the full wording. It allowed the effective use of some pied wood type.

"From the dust jacket: Paul Rand's stature as one of the world's leading graphic designers is uncontestable. For half a century his pioneering work in the field of advertising design and typography has exerted a profound influence on the design profession; he almost single-handedly transformed "commercial art" from a practice that catered to the lowest common denominator of taste to one that could assert its place among the fine arts. Among the numerous clients for whom he has been a consultant and/or designer are the American Broadcasting Company, IBM Corporation, and Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
In this witty and instructive book, Paul Rand speaks on the process and… Read More
