Published in Faden's New General Atlas, 1811, 1794. 28" x 21"- 71.1 x 53.3 cm. Copper engraved map with old hand colouring. Offsetting to the North Sea, two short tears to right margin extending just past neatline, dampstain to lower margin, on the whole very good.
A very detailed double page map showing the Netherlands, Flanders, parts of France, Luxembourg and Germany. Cf Phillips 6010, 6013, 6047.

William Faden was a prominent Scottish mapmaker (he dropped the "Mac" from his name when he moved to London), Royal Geographer to King George III and publisher during the late 19th and early 19th Centuries. He produced one of the finest set of maps during the American Revolution, as well as producing detailed charts from around the world.

Coloured lithograph housed within printed wrappers. Folds as issued, a couple small separations at folds else fine.

A colourful and large folding map of Boston. Shows the areas of Boston, South Boston, East Boston, Charlestown, Somerville, Cambridge and Roxbury. Detailed street map with public buildings, green areas, wharfs and railway lines shown. Inset map of the Environs of Boston from Marblehead to Norfolk County lower left and the Business area lower right.

Copperplate engraving. A very good and crisp impression.


A detailed plan of Batavia, (Jakarta), Indonesia. The lettered and numbered legend indicates the principal buildings including churches, market area, warehouses, castle as well as waterways. The Dutch emblematic lion with sword and shield lower right. Batavia was built by the Dutch in 1619 to establish their colonial power as the Dutch East India Company (VOC).

First American edition. Illustrated. [11]-378, 6 pp. ads. 8vo, green cloth with gilt decorated spine, extremities rubbed, staining to lower edge of textblock in areas, mostly affecting blank margins but occasionally affecting a few plates. Bruns G57.



A good description of game birds, big horn and Rocky Mountain sheep, bison, moose, deer, antelope, caribou, bears, wolves and foxes, wild turkey, wading birds and also three chapters on fishing salmon, bass and pickerel of North America. Gillmore was a Scottish traveller, hunter and prolific author. He also used the pseudonym "Ubique" (Latin of everywhere).

A detailed examination of birds and wildlife (including game fish) of the English Moors throughout the seasons and months including migratory patterns. Abel Chapman was a British naturalist/hunter who was credited in saving the Spanish ibex (wild goat) from extinction (of the four subspecies, two are now extinct). He also helped establish the Sabi Game Reserve in South Africa.

A detailed map of North America, the Caribbean, South America and the Pacific Islands. Alaska is still part of Russian possessions, and Texas stands as a Republic. James Wyld Jr. took over the family business in the mid 19th Century and continued to produce highly detailed maps of all regions of the world.

Murray, an American clergyman became as "Adirondack Murray" after a series of works which popularized the Adirondack area in Upstate New York. An impassioned outdoorsman, Murray was an early advocate for the conservation movement and promoted health and well being by immersing oneself in nature. So popular indeed were his articles on the Adirondacks, people flocked in droves from the city to get out into nature. It is said that the term "vacation" came about from this movement from the city to the wilderness. In this book he travels by railroad along the North-West coast of America and British Columbia. A detailed map covering central and southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and part of Honduras. Shows towns, cities, ports, mines, topographical features and "intendacies"-a political division before Mexico adopted "states". On first glance, this map is very similar to John Thomson's map of the same area, however Pinkterton's map is more detailed and contains more up to date information (based on Humboldt's map of a year prior). The Noboru Nogawa manufacturer was founded in 1825 and created and distributed fine metalwork objects from their shop as well as showrooms in the Kyoto and Miyako Hotels.

A colourful card showing the map of "Indian Territory" (Oklahoma) with vignette of natives hunting buffalo and a decorative arrow case. Area indicates different tribes such as the Choctaws, Chicasaws, Wachitas, Seminoles and Cherokees.

The Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company was founded in Pittsburgh, PA by brothers Charles and John Arbuckle. Pioneering a method of roasting and "sealing" the coffee beans with egg whites, which ensured the longer shelf life, their product met with immediate success. As a promotional gimmick they began to include chromolithographed "trade" cards in their one pound bags with themes of sports, food, historic scenes and the most sought after of the series- maps. The advertising ploy proved to be hugely popular and by 1915 another series was issued showing updated populations and newly built roads and railroads.

A highly colourful poster promoting beach fun on the Côte D'Azur by French graphic artist Jacques Dubois (1912-1994). Dubois designed several tourist and travel posters for the French Government during the 1950's.

Iconic image published after the Second World War promoting peace with doves flying along the French monuments of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe . Colin studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, France. His style was highly influenced by the cubist and surrealist movement of the time and epitomized the Art Deco era. Colin designed posters for the Folies Bergères, the Moulin Rouge and for the French cinema.went on to open a graphic arts school of his own in 1930.

James Sowerby was an English Naturalist who published works on Botany, Mineralogy and Paleontology. He achieved widespread success not only as an illustrator but as a recognized scientist, classifying mineral descriptions and identifying botanical species. His illustrations were included in James Edward Smith's "A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland Hand", "Mineral Conchology of Great Britain " and Curtis's "Flora Londinensis". His English Botany was published in 267 monthly parts over a period of over 23 years.
