Early unlettered mottled calf, bookplate of Wenman Coke, Esq., on front pastedown, with his shelf-marks on the free endsheet. Astrolabe device on title. Spine extremities a bit chipped at tips, with signs of expert consolidation, front free endsheet pulled at gutter, scattered foxing and tanning, clipped bookseller's description tipped to rear endsheet, but a good copy. Half morocco clamshell case. The second collective Elzevier printing of the first two parts of the CONTES ET NOUVELLES EN VERS, with the addition of the "Dissertation sur la Joconde, A Monsieur B***." Brunet describes the first printing of this edition, which appeared in 1668, as an "Édition plus jolie et plus compléte que la précédente en ce qui concerne La Fontaine." Two volumes bound in one, small quarto, with two title pages, 13 engraved plates (of which two are folding). a folding engraved portrait, 8 attractive engraved chapter headings, 7 small engravings within the text, pp (30), 276; 244, red speckled edges, contemporary full calf, raised bands and spine label, slightly rubbed but very sound. There are three early signatures on the title page - one being Alexander Brodie. A small hole in the margins of three pages, a slight marginal tear to one plate, otherwise this is an exceptionally clean and bright copy internally. Very good indeed.. Full-Leather. Very Good.

Bookworm hole to fore edge margin and another to bottom margin (no loss of text in either case), 1 inch split to top of front joint, ink scribbles on half-title and title pages (someone crossed out some very old writing, using so much ink on the base of the title page that it actually caused a split in that page margin), affixed to inside of front board is a certification that this volume belonged to The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, more commonly called The Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta. 1668 Hard Cover. [x], 216, [24], 276, [24] pp. 4to. Vellum boards. A work by the secular priest who Louis XIV appointed as his preacher and almsgiver in 1667, largely as a result of this work, which is a treatise of political philosophy designed as a guide for good governance by a Christian prince (a style of work generally referred to as 'mirrors for princes').

Lugduni Batavorum: Westenium, 1769. Latin text throughout. Title page, dedication leaf, pp 506, (ii), with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table, (slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate), a little age-toning generally, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise very clean internally, bound in full contemporary polished calf, slight wear at the corners, joints cracking slightly, lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. [The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate, but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor, in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. Illustrated with a folding plate at the rear, small octavo, pp xiv, 175, (i), age-toned, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise clean and sound internally, contemporary calf rather worn and bleached, rebacked at some point with the original spine laid down, the corners repaired probably at the same time, all still tight and sound. Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. This charming, and rare, sixth edition was the last edition of the original one-volume printing. Following this edition, the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems, such as 'The Motto,' 'The Mistress,' 'Ode to Pindar,' and 'Davideis'
are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works, but in doing so, he misinterpreted the metrical patterns, and, in doing so, did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth's famous ode "Intimations of Immortality."

William Bates was one of the most popular and highly esteemed 17th-century Nonconformist preachers. His sermons and devotional literature express his strong Puritan views and teach on the importance of understanding and spreading the Gospel.

The front endpaper bears a label identifying this copy as from the cookery collection of John Hodgkin FLS. A scarce edition - an early note on the endpaper, possibly by Hodgkin, comments that it is not mentioned in the bibliographies of Drexel or Vicaire. [John Hodgkin FLS was born in Birmingham in 1857, the son of John Eliot Hodgkin and Sarah Ransome. In 1881, he was living with his parents in Richmond, Surrey and working as an analyst for a medical firm. In 1889 he married Grace Stock and they had three sons.
